Nirvana is the name of two bands, a grunge band from Seattle in the late eighties and the early nineties, and a British prog rock band in the sixties and seventies. I'm 120% sure this thread is about the former.

Seriously? They're quite famous, mostly for their album Nevermind. (Don't look it up if you're uncomfortable with there being a naked baby on the cover.)
Their song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is probably their most well known and I bet you've heard it before.

I don't really pay attention and/or care about it, but I figured I should give a warning in case he decided to google it.

Some people don't really listen to music much.

Yes, but the majority of people have at least heard of them, regardless of their musical exposure.
It's like how people who don't really read books know who Harry Potter is. They might not have read the books or watched the movies, but they have probably heard of the character, because of it's widespread popularity.

Okay, I've heard of them before. Actually, plenty of times but I wouldn't be able to name any of their songs if you asked me or even played them for me and asked me who sings it. I'm listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit now. Never heard this one before.

I'm not too familiar with most grunge bands to be honest. I'm pretty knowledgeable with rock music before the grunge era.
I'm only really familiar with two grunge bands, Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots. Maybe Foo Fighters counts, too. All of them are awesome.
I only know one Nirvana song, though - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Yeah, I'd say Foo Fighters are grunge. Their latest stuff... Not as much, but still a little bit grungey. Their earlier stuff is definitely grunge though.
