I like the Gene Wilder version MUCH better. The story in the Depp version is pessimistic, way off from the book, and Wonka is a total JERK in the Depp version.

Gene Wilder is a great actor, but not as good as Johnny Depp. Depp's Wonka had that creepy feeling mentioned in the book and didn't run around singing. Wilder's Charlie was also bratty when he is supposed to be this super sweet child.
Well if you wanted honesty, that's all you had to say. I never want to let you down or have you go, it's better off this way.

The thing is, in the Johnny depp version, there is a load of non relevant stuff. Father is a dentist. So?
Also, Wonka acts as if he hates the children, like he WANTS to get rid of them.
