I can't think of my favorite right now, but the Series of Unfortunate Events was pretty good, but mostly the last 7 or so. The first 3 were just... bluh.
My favorite series for small children is the Disney Fairies series by Gail Carson Levine (not the one with a lot, though, they've really gone downhill). It is THE BEST series (well, there's only three, but still) for younger children and the illustrations are gorgeous (by David Christiana). If you're under 13 or know someone who is, you should definitely read it.
