But offline is a whole different story.

That's the misconception of internet anonymity, that everyone thinks that because no can see who you are over the computer screen, it's supposedly okay to say it.

The fact is that it really isn't; thinking that way is nothing more than replacing real human interaction with a digital one that is not as socially bonding. If we can't talk to people we know about our problems, what does that really tell us as a person, or as a society?

That we don't want people we know to know too much about us?
...

No, that we can't we can't really be open about who we are in real life and that we're resorting to online relationships [which are often easily deletable by turning off the computer screen] to cope. And it's rather unhealthy, especially considering that the anonymity of the web hides who we truly are behind the computer screen.

Just sometimes I don't want to talk to my friends/parents about stuff
I could talk to my little bro
But he's, well, little.

I guess so, but by that do you mean Scratch isn't watching out for people who're waiting to see somebody make a dumb mistake like giving out their school or something?

I have speech problems in real life and I'm always tripping over my tounge, it sounds weird but because I'm an introvert I produce more spit when I make social contact and it's really hard to speak when you need to swallow all the time. If you asked my online "friends" you'd get a totally different answer to who I am than if you asked my old real life "friends", because I can say everything I want so clearly and my point is understood. I'm not really too fussy over what goes out to people, if someone wants to pay for a plane ticket to London to come kill me because they got my IP then it's really on them. Misc gave me the chance to show who I am through a variety of ways, limiting those ways and giving them a hard set of rules is going to limit me as a person and I like Scratch's community.

Just to let you know, I'm guessing this won't be very popular with the community. I think most of the people who used Misc. will quit either now or after the replacement when they realize that it's nothing like the old misc.

We still watch out for that stuff on the main site (those stuff pretty much isn't allowed on most all-ages websites anyway). But that's not the issue I'm bringing up here.

Most of the mods are getting concerned with the Miscellaneous forum being use like a substitute for things like getting advice on personal life issues and relationships, or ranting about personal issues, or even using it like a Twitter/Facebook substitute where we're suddenly posting personal things online without giving it much thought. It's just not good.  hmm

How do you know what the community likes and does not like?

That kind of was expected before the ST released the changes.

Actually that's rather a normal of any website undergoing change - some people stay because they welcome the change or have no qualms about it, other people leave because they don't like the changes.

As has been said many times before, sometimes the Misc has seemed like a "reddit for teens." There's nothing wrong with a reddit for teens, or an open topic forum for that matter. But, as stated in the initial post, we need to focus our energy on supporting Scratch.

Misc is like a rest zone, you can come here when you're sick of talking about Scratch, if everything becomes Scratch related then people will flee.

Hmm... You see, I always thought forums on a site were supposed to be vaguely related to that site. You know, like the Steam forums are about Steam games and the like. If people joined Scratch solely for Misc, they're missing the best part of Scratch.

Well, actually, it seems that the most dissent against the closing is from users who use Miscellaneous a lot, which is a small in comparison to those who use the forums for other things other than Miscellaneous.

Yeah, but not every Misc. member dislikes the changes.

My point still stands that a "NO" has been the most voiced opinion of it.
Whether or not it's accurate or whatever I don't care.

And just because those users use Misc a lot doesn't mean their opinion doesn't matter as much. The Scratch Team seems to say "Oh they used it a lot but their the only ones so we'll trash their opinions" semi-often.

Well, of course it matters, but so do the opinions of everyone else on Scratch.  hmm

Miscellaneous has grown up to be this closed-off place, and going in the undesired direction when it was first created out of Inspiration and More. It seems we lost that part in the process once people started to abuse Miscellaneous as a place as a posting free-for-all instead of using it as a place to express creativity outside Scratch. I guess from having Miscellaneous and giving it this freestyle mentality we shot ourselves in the foot.

The alternative choice was to have the Miscellaneous forum removed outright with no place for creativity outside Scratch whatsoever - but that would be a pretty terrible thing since it also takes away the threads that are likely worth keeping. So the decision was to replace it two others that move towards the ideals of what was intended in the first place.

No we shouldn't. The answer would depend on where the poll is placed on the forums.
