I got this totally-not-a-scam email from some guy called Gary Epps.

I copy-pasted the email in the following quote.

Gary Epps wrote:

Dear Western Union Customer,

You have been awarded with the sum of $50,000 USD by our office, as one of our customers who use Western Union in their daily business transaction. This award was been selected through the internet, where your e-mail address was indicated and notified. Please provide Mr. Gary Epps with the following details listed below so that your fund will be remited to you through Western Union.

1. Name:______
2. Address________
3. Country:_______
4. Phone Number____
5. Occupation:________
6. Gender:_________________
7. Age___________________

Mr.Gary Epps
E-mail: wu_africadep@shqiptar.eu

As soon as these details are received and verified, your fund will be transferred to you.

Thank you, for using western union

Because wu_africadep@shqiptar.eu is totally a real Western Union company email address. Heck, I don't even use Western Union.

I decided to reply and give the not-a-total-spammer-person information.

I wrote:

Hello, totally-legitimate-Western-Union-employee-and-not-just-some-random-spammer email person!

Here's my also-totally-legitimate information:

Name: Mr. Lubla Croonyhead
Address: 12345678 Totally Real City, 99999, QZ
Country: Donkey Kong
Phone Number: 555-5555-5555555-555555555555555555559
Occupation: Being a totally-legitimate-and-not-just-some-random-spammer email person.
Gender: Undecided.
Age: 92.693

Discuss stupid, obviously fake spam emails.

Re: I got this totally-not-a-scam email from some guy called Gary Epps.

Yeah, that's totally not a scam!

*SENDS INFO, THEN GETS STALKED*

I get these fake UPS emails that say that the package wasn't delivered and to pick up the package at their office. They're not that convincing, seeing as their grammar, capitalizations, and punctuation is absolutely horrible. It contains an attachment in which there is a virus. Do NOT open the attachment should you ever get that email.

And if I reply, I just say, "That's the oldest one in the book, nice try."

Re: I got this totally-not-a-scam email from some guy called Gary Epps.

It's best not to reply to spam, often spammers check to see if an email address is active - often by embedding images in the message, that they can check if you have viewed.  Replying to them is even more obvious, and will likely increase the amount of spam you get, and it will also get harder to detect as the spammers will know that you are worth spending effort on.

So be careful!

Luckily, I use Gmail, which automatically filters most spam into the "Spam" folder.

And, it's actually pretty good at it.

I write to contact you about a foreigner bearing the same name as yours, who died here in Singapore, over

However, the Investor died intestate, no next-of-kin, nobody came forward all these years to lay claim of

Gee, that makes sense. I'm sure a good reason to leave massive amounts of money to people is "they have the same name!!!!!!!!" On the bright side, I have discovered the existence of spam Swiss pie (like the cheap ham product) in the ads nearby. Also, in the time it took to write this, I got two new ones. Wow.
