Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

I'm glad to see that you guys are talking about this.

ee - by disclaimer, do you mean something to be added to the gallery description?

If so, I think it's a good idea - and would suggest that it also link to a project describing the points made by paintsplat here and forest in the comments on the gallery. It is important that people understand that stigmatization is not a good way to address this.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

@Lightnin - gallery description changed

Back to topic:

I just read an article about the problem with serving sizes,
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/02/the-problem-with-serving-sizes link to
this is not only about more calories but salt and other additives too.

When i do (steam) cooking a pound of broccoli for example
i don´t add two grams of salt or other conserving additives.

When i buy chips i usually eat half of the bag in one session  sad
I did not figure out my way to change this habit, it tastes so good...

Half a bag of corn chips has more calories than a pound of broccoli.

1 pound of broccoli:     200 calories
5 oz (140 grams) chips:  700 calories

Surprise, surprise:

1 pound of broccoli:     200 calories
5 oz (140 grams) chips:  700 calories

Broccoli is largely carbohydrates. Chips are largely fat (lipids). Lipids have more energy, for their mass, than carbohydrates. More energy that is being unused and left to grow into body fat...

About chips: I love chips so much. But I usually restrain myself because I only get to eat them once in a while. So if you think about not getting to eat chips for another month, you might spread the chips out over several days, giving your body more time to absorb all the possible nasty stuff in the chips.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

user Goch linked me to a Ffred project, comments there linked to
a project based on the book idea of

Eat this not that by David Zinczenko
take a look inside online somewhere, great insights on the first pages...

Unfortunately this project is glitchy, despite so much work (sprites) put into.

I suggest to play it online, click on Dallas only and observe a single day
and restart the project (green flag) for another combination of meals.

@coppearlix: wishful thinking for me to spread a bag of chips, this stuff is addictive!
Ten oz of broccoli fill my stomach with near no calories, chips do not.

How much excercise per day?

Obesity and exercise?

Is plain walking enough?

Youtube video by a MD, start at minute 4´:00´´ for a preview

From an artists or Scratchers view, this is a very nice

There is also an amazing book series that you should read, called Eat This, Not That. It just shows you how bad most of the food you're eating actually is for you.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

There's probably about a million articles on the web explaining why being obese is bad for you. It causes high blood pressure (which can cause you to have a stroke), eating the wrong foods can cause high cholesterol (too much fat in the blood) which "gums up" your blood vessels and can result in a stroke or a heart attack. Type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate - which can result in circulation problems that can cause you to lose your feet, severe ED problems, early death.

So why not design a game where every time someone chooses the "wrong" food - they get "sickness points." After so many points, they go in the hospital and have surgery. If they continue accumulating points, they eventually die.

For every correct choice - healthy food choices and exercise, they get negative points. Just like in real life - even if you're severely overweight, changing your habits can start giving you your life back.

Just a suggestion - I hope it gets you brainstorming.

Thanks for your reply TSKendrick! New points in your post!
There is already a similar game in the gallery, ETNT.
I´d like to see a remix of, see my first post here!

Changing habits is easier said than done,
even facing severe consequences many of us keep on doing their habits...
Some kinds of nutrition might be addictive, making change more difficult.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

75 yo grandmother hit the gym in her fifties...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernestine_Shepherd

She started out of shape at age 56...read on...

Read about her gradual jaw-dropping transformation,
using links from wikipedia, do a search or watch inspiring videos with her on youtube.

Keep in mind this takes years,  muscles burn calories
and your nutrition habits will adapt gradually over time.
No need to change everything overnight.

No muscle growth without training and enough proteins.
Jot down daily your protein intake while updating your training diary.
Frequent growth impulses by moderate training are needed but avoid excessive training:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_exercise#Excessive_exercise

After reaching individual transformation goals less training is needed to keep your muscles!

By reading this randomized study with 1209 adults it seems you can keep your current weight without caloric restriction, even without exercise as exercise is NOT mentioned in this study. Section ´Weight-Maintenance Phase´ for (protein) details.
Adding muscle building exercises to this study´s findings might be the holy grail of weight loss...

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

what about a side-scrolling platformer
and you have to avoid foods high in carbohydrates
and if you eat to many you get really freaking fat
and you can like barely jump anymore
and if you eat too much your health bar starts to go down
but the more you move the less fat you get

how's that
