Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

You could help an obese person make decisions about his day. When you make them, if you get mostly right decisions, you get healthier and are rewarded (and of course told why the decisions you made are right) and if you make the wrong thing, you explain why these choices make an impact on his life (for instance, eating steaks or something healthy, exercising, etc.).

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

It'd be like a platformer. You could eat fattening foods, or non-fattening foods.

If you're skinny, you could fit into small spaces. If you're fat, you could roll around and break breakable surfaces and survive in cold water and crush enemies with your fatness.

But if you get fat, you won't be able to jump.
If you get way too fat, you explode and lose a life.

It's educational, too!

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Thanks for pointing me to that interesting thread, eventexception! If you want people to read. then I suggest to make the texts very short. I think that speech bubbles are an excellent means to achieve this. Rule of thumb: If a text does not fit into a normal-sized speech bubble, then it's too long. Also, if you invent some character that viewers can emotionally connect to, then  they will be more likely to read what that character has to say.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Oi! I'm very interested in this topic. I recently decided I wanted to get fitter, so I made a sort-of game on Scratch. It includes exercises. Basically, you're a warrior and animals attack you. Each animal has a different exercise. You complete the exercise, then click the animal to signal you've finished. When you click it, you get the experience points. Every so often you level up. I've used my own game to exercise and I think it works really well!

What do you guys think?

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Reasons obesity is bad:

1.) Health problems (diabetes, heart problems, breathing problems, low stamina, excessive body heat)
2.) Appearance problems, leading to emotional problems
3.) Your family will worry about you constantly
4.) Your family is more likely to be obese as well, if they eat junk food too
5.) Eating the wrong foods makes you worse/unfocused at school/your job

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Back to topic:

I still need more input or links why obesity is harmful to motivate for change  smile
and
I am looking for ideas to keep players reading instead of letting them jump to the next project due to boredom  big_smile

To reduce boredom
Try and make it into a large project. Perhaps have different days, and after each day you read a small paragraph. Also, have a wait block until you can press space to continue. It's more likely for them to read it, but not definitely.

Links
Sorry, I don't have any links, but I might edit it if I find any! Oh and PS, I'm sorry if these ideas were already submitted, but I haven't finished reading everything!

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

First of all... is this going to be an article? An interactive article? Or is it going to be an actual GAME? If it isn't a GAME--if it's only READING--you aren't going to get much attention in the first place.

An interesting idea!  Everything I read says that obesity is a big problem.  One thing you might want to try to address in your game is why.  Why is it a problem?  What are the medical risks of being over weight?   What are the other costs (financial, societal, and so on) ?

There actually is at least one area where being over-weight seems to have a survival advantage...and that's cold-water immersion survival times.  A person's body fat helps protect them from the cold.  I do a lot of cold-water kayak paddling so I'm very interested in that particular topic  smile

Hence your name...

I think this is a cool way to motivate yourself!  Have you shared your project on the site?  I'd love to see it.  There was a recent article in Popular Science that discussed ways to "gameify" your life to help motivate you to achieve your goals...I found it fascinating.  Here's another article on "gameification" I found with Google.

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Cool!! Looks like a great article. I've started to gamify exercise and academics, too. And no, I haven't shared the project (it's messy, the graphics suck and some of the exercises have names only I would understand) but maybe I can fix it up and share a template...

Thanks again  big_smile , i am wading through your input and my own biased ideas!

I just tried the free http://freemind.sourceforge.net,
seems to be great for structuring larger projects.

At the moment i favorite some action game with
a weight changing character and
knowledge banners to unlock and read.

How do you think about?

Weight-changing character sounds interesting except you want to make it absolutely clear that the goal is not only to lose weight, but to gain health & fitness...

Please make sure you specify that it only causes Type 2 diabetes - Type 1 is something you're born with, it isn't caused by obesity(my friend is type 1 diabetic, that's why I am insistent on that difference).

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

Have you ever seen a show called The Biggest Loser? Well it's about adults who go to a ranch and they lose as much weight as they can and the winner gets like $25,000 or something like that. You could make a game based off of that.

Or you could do something like you go around the house and try to find unhealthy foods. And every time you find one you have a little message saying why it is unhealthy but you can still eat it once in a while, like I Spy.
