Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

I would be glad if someone else remixes or writes a project for  big_smile
Just read on for ideas, content and images.
Picking a single issue for a project is less overwhelming.

For example: kick a can, avoid drinks high in carbohydrate,
calculate the sugar teaspoon equivalent a full soft drink/juice bottle contains.

My related project search result: http://scratch.mit.edu/galleries/view/155016
Most projects therein existed before this forum post,
some projects might be improved by remixing ?  ETNT for ex. needs reduction,
Ffred´s beautiful food pyramid needs a content remix with Harvard's healthy eating plate.

worth being integrated, please reply!

Links, Youtube videos, wikipedia articles, game ideas...

In the meantime I discovered a great resource: http://www.cdc.gov/obesity

I will upload my version when i am finished,
if you are impatient just upload your own version!
You will find plenty of information and sprites by reading this thread  big_smile

Some highlights, but you will find the best ones by reading the other posts!
I LOVE this headline: ´...Distrust the Trust ...´link to

My favorite blog is The defiant dieter by a female Canadian journalist, link to see posts  smile

########## still an open question: #######

How to keep players reading?

Any known projects (link to?) combining action with texts to read for in game promotion?

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

An interesting idea!  Everything I read says that obesity is a big problem.  One thing you might want to try to address in your game is why.  Why is it a problem?  What are the medical risks of being over weight?   What are the other costs (financial, societal, and so on) ?

There actually is at least one area where being over-weight seems to have a survival advantage...and that's cold-water immersion survival times.  A person's body fat helps protect them from the cold.  I do a lot of cold-water kayak paddling so I'm very interested in that particular topic  smile

You covered several ideas in your post,
i will throw in my cold water related ideas first:

I doubt that these former professional cold water hunters were obese until they met western nutrition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eskimo

-->  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuit_diet

Do you have any data what is the survival edge of higher body fat in minutes compared to slim people in cold water?

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

How about a racing game where the player has to have the right amount of food depending on how much they train, if they don't eat enough they will become too skinny and their speed will suffer and they will not be able to run for too long. If the player eats too much they will become obese and will have the same effects as being too skinny, but will be so much slower as being skinny as he will be much heavier.

I enjoy Liru's idea. How about you can make your food choices for the day, and you work out anywhere at night, (perhaps the YMCA) and your food choices reflects on your performance? Maybe it doesn't have to be a game, maybe a realistic simulation. Anyways, props for making a game about a serious topic that NEEDS to be fixed!

But they ate whale fat! And seal fat. And they had nice snug coats to make them sink faster. And they were skilled so they wouldn't fall in.

The mystery of Paddle's name has finally been solved!

On topic, yeah, "Why is it bad?" would be a good idea. So would "how does it happen?" or "Can I prevent it?" or whatever. I dunno.

One thing I believe you should include is to stress that you shouldn't base your opinion of someone on whether or not they're obese, but whether or not they're a good person.

How about a fitness game. Sort of like wii fit, but on the computer. Make it as close to wii fit as possible.

I don´t have a wii and sadly there are a few obese marathon participants,
even high intense sport alone will not do the trick !

Btw. it would be great if you could outline some ideas of wii sports here or
better you write a home fitness project Scratched, stickmans to illustrate  smile
(With a bit more interactivity compared to a youtube video)

One more:

I have little clue about, anyone here with links and ideas for this?
( ideas, wikipedia links, gov. abstracts for ...)
I doubt players will read more than one or two Scratch screens about,
so great headlines are needed  big_smile

Re: Obesity - Ideas for a obesity related game?

There's not really much to explain about wii sports. I was thinking you could have several sport related games (Golf, Tennis, Baseball, Bowling, ect.) and use glove pie (glivepie.org). You could pick up a wiimote at walmart for around 10 bucks, and use glove pie to play the wii game. See, you could really swing the wiimote to play the games.

http://glovepie.org/glovepie.php deserves its own thread - wow great input, elfin8er!!!
   found so far: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=367804#p367804

Regarding my upcoming obesity project:
Sports and calories counting alone will not do the trick, i already researched what probably does the trick.

I still need more input or links why obesity is harmful to motivate for change
and
I am looking for ideas to keep players reading instead of letting them jump to the next project due to boredom.

You could put it in clutter. Clutter allows you to put a bunch of scratch projects together, to make a longer project (Sort of) you can make it so that the user gets a password at the end of the project, that they can then enter on the next project. This way they can't just skip to the last one without knowing the password. The only thing is, if you have any variables, they can't be transferred to the project. When you could do how ever, is make it so that the user records their calories lost, after each game, and then adds them together at the end. Also, you could use the swing detecting feature in glove pie, to make it so that the user has to swing, rather then tilt. This would probably feel more realistic.

Also, I'm making a Glove Pie discussion right now, so I'll give you the link when I'm done here.

Maybe incorporate some sort of game every few pages as a quiz for what they've read?
