It would likely be just as easy.

Warm hands will cause convection with a bowl or without one.

As long as he keeps his hands away from the glass, it shouldn't  be affected in that large a way. Convection can be rather slow to start up. You need some heat to get it going, and as long as he lets it sit, it should semi-void the convection.

But, if your hands warm up the bowl the convection will travel to the paper through it.
