If I were to post a project using an older version of Scratch...

... would it work as it would in the actual Scratch application? Or would it get messed up because the applet is designed for 1.2.1/1.3?

The applet should be backwards compatible. My (partly very) old projects work just fine online. Also, old projects can usually be edited in newer versions of Scratch. Once they have been saved, however, if you edit them again with an older version of Scratch, you might not be able to read the files or use the newer blocks.
