Thanks. What's on index.php? Doesn't look like anything.

We should pick things from the list and discuss them in detail, before doing much coding or design. Any, really.

I think we should start with sub categories/boards.

I love folders. I'll give you a (shortened) example of one of my directory paths on my computer: C:\Users\Scimonster\Dropbox\Public\Stuff\Scratch\Website\original\Forums\Block Library. That's where I have some images of the Library, and also a backup file from a while ago.
I think we should add folders into the ScratchBB experience. So, for example, we could have: Scratch/Advanced Topics/[Mods/[BYOB|Panther|other]|Web programming/[HTML|JS|CSS|PHP|other]|System programming/[Windows|Mac|Java|Python|other]|Advanced Scratching|other]. Complicated, eh?  tongue
Here's a tree to help:

Code:

Scratch
- Advanced Topics
- - Mods
- - - BYOB
- - - Panther
- - - Other
- - Web programming
- - - HTML
- - - JS
- - - CSS
- - - PHP
- - - Other
- - System programming
- - - Windows
- - - Mac
- - - Java
- - - Python
- - - Other
- - Advanced Scratching
- - Other

Upsides: Allow for AWESOME categorization of topics.
Downsides: Not everyone will know exactly where to put their topics, and that means more work for mods, moving them.
Maybe there could be "moving mods", who just move stuff, but aren't full mods.
But then the report system would need to be improved, to say what kind of report it is, by dropdown menu(?).

Let's discuss along this track for now...

It sounds pretty good. I certainly was suggesting a better report system to make spam-response times faster, allowing mods to deal with higher priority reports before the low priority ones without having to open each post report.

A few friends and I pay monthly to rent a dedicated server. If you want, I could set us guys up with an account (We have full root access via terminal) and allow that account to ftp into a folder containing web files. I can configure the web server part of it to display a different page depending on the domain name as well. I suggest we use a domain name from http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en as they're a free. Although I think we should decide on a domain name before any of you guys run off and register one (so don't!).

Edit: Just in case you guys want to know, we host it with http://fraghost.net/ using a dedicated package (not one of the ones displayed on the main site though).

does it support perl(for Bugzilla)?

Imagine having a computer running ubuntu. Could that run perl? My dedicated server is just a box in a server room somewhere running ubuntu. Yes it can run perl.

I don't think many people read this.

Re: Scratch Forum Development Thread

I asked the ST about the domain, and apparently they are running low on resources. So, no. We have to use our own host. (I recommend horizon-host, they are quite good)

Lightnin is cool.

How about tags for threads, rather than categorising things too much?  smile

Re: Scratch Forum Development Thread

I have an idea for a few BBCode tags to save linking time: [forum] [project] [gallery] [user] and [wiki]. They would work just the [url]tag, but as shortcuts.

Code:

[forum=topic|58790]Block Library[/forum] or [forum=58790]Block Library[/forum] or simply [forum=topic]58790[/forum] or [forum]58790[/forum]
[forum=post|1000000]The 1,000,000th post![/forum] or [forum=post]1000000[/forum]
[forum=board|46]Misc forum[/forum] [forum=board]46[/forum]
[forum=tag|new user]Topics tagged with "new user"[/forum] [forum=tag]new user[/forum]

[project=scimonster/2169421]Snake Eyes[/project] or [project=2169421]Snake Eyes[/project] or simply [project]scimonster/2169421[/project] or [project]2169421[/project]
[gallery=149410]DIY SDS gallery[/gallery] or [gallery]149410[/gallery]
[user=scimonster]Me :)[/user] or [user=182451]Lightnin[/user] or simply [user]Scimonster[/user] or [user]182451[/user]

[wiki=Blocks Plugin]JSO's extension to render blocks[/wiki] or [wiki]Blocks Plugin[/wiki]

What do you think of these "shortcut" BBCodes? They should be self explanatory.  tongue

You hit it. GREAT idea.

To expand further, you could have forums with the same broad categories — like "Advanced Topics" and such — and then more specific tags for individual threads (I meant threads, not posts, *  tongue ) like "BYOB", "HTML", "Python", "Linux", etc. Individual threads could have multiple tags. Perhaps there could be a way of filtering by specific tags, for instance if you're interested in Python and BYOB, then you could filter ATs to just show threads with those topics. What d'you think?  smile

YES. This is way better than the original sub-board idea.
I'll make a mockup soon of sorting a board by tagged posts.

That is actually a very good idea! So you could perhaps choose from a list of common tags when creating your thread, or type in your own! Very neat idea! Then people would be able to, say, block threads to do with linux if they're not interested in them and can't help! It also means if you're trying to find a thread and you can't remember the name but you remember it was about PHP you can narrow your search  wink

Sorry, we're on database connection already? Until we've decided exactly what's on offer for each post there's no point creating a database since we don't know all the fields we need in the SQL table.

Re: Scratch Forum Development Thread

I think one thing we need to discuss is how our files will be structured, eg. the fact that in the scratch forums, topics are viewed in the viewtopic.php and things. Will we have a php script that does a certain thing? config file? All of these need to be decided.

We can't make a setup until nearly everything else is done. And currently we shouldn't start coding anything, we should be planning the features and how we will be making them.

I can still code the html interface. Sure, i understand that, we will leave the php till last.

Sometimes the read/unread feature here is quite annoying. I think out system should allow for marking specific topics/posts as read/unread.

maybe it should only display whether it's read or unread if you have visited the topic in the past, and maybe it could show you how many posts have been added since then?

I find it useful when it displays as unread when it's a new topic though. Showing how many new posts since your last visit is much better. Also, as soon as you view a topic, it should automatically mark it as read, unless you manually mark it unread. This prevents it from coming up with lots of "unread" topics that you have read.
