Actually it was made to be less childish than previously, and the creator said she wasn't really expecting it to go to such a large audience and she's quite proud as she thought people would just call it gay or an evil corperation and never watch it.
She made it less girly and for older people basically, as the previous show failed due to the target audience being too small.

You do need to watch a few to get into it, it's like star-trek I guess, even though I've only watched one with Q in it (that's how I found out he played Discord.)
