In C++ you can use a script where you can read and write files. This could be used to make saving possible. It would also show people how writing and reading files works.
You could make a block that says something like "Set () to ______" so you could set the value to a variable or list.

I believe they are adding this to 2.0 or something like it. From what I've heard they are looking for ways to save certain data and adding ways to interact with social sites.

If you have a Windows machine, try Panther <pantherprogrammimng.weebly.com>. It's a spinoff of Scratch that has blocks that pertain to your interests.
