Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

On a somewhat related note, here's a recent post about a copyright case that was recently thrown out of court because "Inspiration isn't infringement."

http://boingboing.net/2011/12/12/inspir … gemen.html

"Although the Bratz dolls may indeed bring to mind the image that Belair created, Belair cannot monopolize the abstract concept of an absurdly large-headed, long limbed, attractive, fashionable woman," Judge Shira A. Scheindlin wrote. "He has a copyright over the expressions of that idea as they are specifically articulated ... but he may not prevent others from expressing the same idea in their different ways."

So even if a creator reserves all rights to their images, that doesn't prevent others from expressing the same idea in different ways.

Much of what we see flagged for "copying" when it comes to art on Scratch falls into this category. Art that takes inspiration from someone else's art is not copying, and not against copyright law.

Same for music too, I assume? For my games I've started making, I've created my own music. I'd like it if people could notify me before using my music on Scratch. If Scratcher A used Scratcher B's music that Scratcher B created himself, what does Scratcher B do?

The idea behind sharing art can also be applied to sharing music. Whenever you put something original on the Scratch site (such as an image or a sound), you have to be aware that it's under a license that allows sharing and adaptation (which means changes may also be applied); in your case, people can use your music in their projects, they may also be allowed to edit the file as well prior to putting it in their project (for example, they can cut the sound to make it short or add their own clips to the original track).

One thing about licenses that allow sharing: generally, there is no need to ask for permission from the original owner (only credit is required) for use of the material, so if you're wary about your stuff being used without permission, then maybe uploading your music to Scratch is not a good option (the same can also be said of other sites such as Newgrounds which also applies a similar sharing license).

Thanks for that clarification, cheddargirl  smile  I had been wondering about that for a while.

Certainly and argue. Sure, men and women has to be permitted to REMIX, but you'll see whenever they relax and take a sprite or perhaps back ground, preserve the application therefore to their laptop or computer, near a The begining routine, reopen the application, punch the image generally there as well as finish loading the application declaring

Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

I have a good idea! If people use GIMP there is an option to add a watermark in. Even in other image manipulation programs there is a semitransparent color, type your username in that and you're good to go!

Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

Really good advice, thanks. i think it is not nice to steal art. Because what if the person who drew it had spent hours on it, and then sombody else steals it then markes it as his/her own? that won't be fair at all. But if s/he asks nicly to remix, and gives credit, it won't be stealing , it'll be remixing, which is better.  big_smile

Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

I agree with Scratch's share-alike license and use Creative Commons whenever I upload something to deviantART.

Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

I think that if you remix someones art you should give credit, and I also think you shouldn't change the art without the artists permission.

Re: Sharing Art on Scratch

If someone takes your game and 'remixes' it without changing anything at all, and without giving credit, is it alright to ask them to give credit?

Yes, in fact, you NEED to. That happened to me once and I reported the project, and discussed it with the author until he deleted it.
