Chapter 1: Welcome to my Mind
Tuesday, 6th of March 1986
Dear diary,
My name is Tonks, Nymphadora Tonks. Today is my 13th birthday, for which I received a diary. Please allow me to tell you a bit about myself.
I am a half-blood witch, born to Andromeda and Ted Tonks. I am a metamorphmagus. I am in my third year at Hogwarts, the best school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world. I am a Hufflepuff, and I sometimes morph my hair black and yellow to annoy the Slytherins, particularly Proffesor Snape, head of house. It annoys him to think a metamorphmagus was sorted into a house besides Slytherin.
As I can change my appearance at will, there is no possible way I could describe my looks to you, but I often wear my hair a streaky pinky purple shade, usually just below my shoulder, with a fringe messily over my eyes. I have brown eyes, and a heart shaped face.
It is time for me to head off for Transfiguration. Even though I often prank her, I think I'm one of Professor McGonagall's favourite students. I guess I am quite a natural in Transfiguration, seeing as I am a metamorphmagus. I find the spells and other work very simple too. I still have to fix my hair. Should I opt for more pink or more purple?
-Tonks
P.S I think I'll choose pink.
Tonks pushed herself away from her desk and sprung up, grabbing her bag and stuffing into it her quill, Transfiguration and Charms books (since Charms was next on her timetable), some parchment, ink, her Hufflepuff themed agenda and her Hufflepuff scarf and hat. She glanced into the mirror, brushing her hair, and then quickly morphed it so her fringe and the tips of her hair were pink. She threw on a pair of shoes and a pair of yellow and black legwarmers, before rushing out of the Hufflepuff common room and into the hallways, up the stairs, almost tripping a number of times, then bursting into the Transfiguration classroom, panting.
Professor McGonagall stared sharply at Tonks. "Nymphadora," she began "could you please try to be early for class next time. And also, try not to trip up," she added as Tonks tripped up over a chair. Charlie Weasley snickered. "Weasley, that attitude does not help the situation at all," Professor McGonagall said sharply.
Charlie blushed, his cheeks now complementing his fiery tomato red hair. Tonks grinned as she sat beside him.
"So, how's the birthday girl?" he chuckled under his breath, swishing his emerald green quill into Tonks' face.

Remus Lupin handed two gold Galleons into the cashier at Flourish and Blotts. The diary was expensive, but it would be fun to have a two-way diary, and it was a chance to meet a new friend. He wondered who had the other half. He would soon find out, he thought as he walked back to the Leaky Cauldron.
In his room, Remus carefully removed his battered old quill from its case, before turning to the first page in his diary. He dipped the tip of his quill in some blue-black ink, then stopping.
For there, already etched onto the page, were words. Those belonging to a thirteen year old Hufflepuff girl named "Nymphadora Tonks".
Remus carefully read her entry, before proceeding to write.
Hello Nymphadora,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Remus Lupin, and I must admit, I am thirteen years your elder. Even still, I hope we can become friends. I remember when I was thirteen, a Gryffindor prankster, messing around with my friends. Good times, I must admit. Since then, things have changed, and I haven't seen my best friends for years.
I am a wizard, experienced in defensive magic, Transfiguration and Charms. I could never create a decent potion though. I was prefect in my days. I look considerably older than twenty-six, with my scars and the grey hairs in my messy brown mop. I have hazel eyes.
I remember Minerva back in my day, and I, too, often pranked her. I remember a Snape, for Slytherin, Severus Snape. We could never see eye to eye. I knew old Slughorn would retire; he was potions master when I was in Hogwarts.
I wish I could write more now, but I honestly cannot think of anything else to say. Well, I hope you enjoy your birthday, and enjoy being thirteen, while it lasts.
-Remus
Remus placed the diary carefully on the edge of the desk, and wondered when Nymphadora would reply. He figured at about six o'clock this evening, around dinner. He got up from his chair, then walked out of his room and down the hall, into the front part of the Leaky Cauldron.
