Moodle Integration

As a teacher, my two favorite programs are Scratch and Moodle.  I'd love to see a moodle extension that makes it super-simple to load Scratch projects into Moodle forums and pages.

I've read that the next version of Scratch will be able to export text files.  With that in mind, my absolute dream come true would be the ability to send reports to the moodle grade book.  With that functionality, Scratch could become an excellent tool for creating educational exercises.

Re: Moodle Integration

Did you know, ashbyr1, that you can already export a summary of your Scratch project by shift-clicking on the Extras button and selecting the "write project summary" option? This summary will contain quasi-pseudo-code versions of all the scripts in a project, which might just be what you're looking for...

I tried that and nothing happened.  But I don't think it's what I'm hoping for.

Basically, I want to be able to send a variable (a score on a quiz for example) to the grade book database in moodle.

Re: Moodle Integration

These summaries are written to the Scratch directory on your hard drive (the one containing scratch.exe)

Re: Moodle Integration

Ok, thanks.  I found it, and that's definitely an interesting feature.  But I'm looking for a way to extract and save a players score at the end of a game.

Re: Moodle Integration

What do you mean with integration with Moodle? Do you mean the ability to display Scratch projects on a Moodle website? Is that related to your second comment of being able to save player scores? I'm a bit confused...

Is there a Moodle site you would recommend me to use if I wanted to test integration or do I have to install my own? It definitely sounds like an interesting idea.

What about a process in which you first share your Scratch project on scratch.mit.edu and then you push a button on our website that posts the project onto a Moodle site?

Re: Moodle Integration

You are right.  I've entangled at least two ideas here.  I'll clarify one now and get back to the rest.
First,
I've just looked more closely at one of my moodle classes.  As it's currently set up, some modules in moodle allow me to embed scratch projects hosted on the MIT site. Other modules (the forums and workshops) won't.  I think this might be fixed by tweaking the moodle modules.  This would allow me to facilitate discussions about projects more fluidly in my classes/club.

The process of uploading a project to the MIT site and then embedding it in a moodle discussion is tolerably tedious to me, but it would absolutely overwhelm many of my students (and coworkers).  To make it work in a middle school classroom, it would need a "browse-->upload" form on the site.

Regarding a moodle site to test integration, I'm no help.  As a teacher, I don't have those permissions.

Hi! Do you go to PALCS school? They use moodle!

Re: Moodle Integration

I've made a plugin for Moodle 1.9 that automatically embeds scratch games - either as a link in a label or as an attachment in a forum message.

Re: Moodle Integration

I posted a different thread about SCORM packages for moodle, and this would allow pulling environment variables from the LMS (Student name, for example), and allow writing scores back to the LMS..   Would be very interested in seeing Scratch integrate into Moodle, so that the two platforms can exchange data.  This would be a fantastic tool for instructional design!

Re: Moodle Integration

I made a plugin for Moodle 2.0 and Scratch.

Download the zip file and copy the contents into the moodle folder filter

I hope you will like it!
