No thanks. For one thing that would mean I'd have to give you my email.  tongue  And also, I just don't like doing that anyway. Sorry.

Okay, what is your story about?

Well, the one with all the sword fighting is going to be your classic (or cliche, if you want to be cynical  tongue ) fantasy story. But I might add a sword fight to Space Academy (a sci-fi story).

There's this prophecy (don't worry, it's not that cliche. There's a proper explanation behind it) that a dragon living in some far off land will come to the citadel and destroy it and "the chosen one" has to go a slay the dragon before it comes. It's not actually as cliche as it sounds.  tongue  The prophecy is actually a plot to kill the "chosen one".

Make sure the bad guy is confident he/she'll win.  And make him/her almost do.  Makes a very interesting story.  Plenty of anger and the occasional twinge of fear.

Sword fights are a fundamental part of certain genres of stories. While sword fights are nasty things, there was really no need for that comment. It's like if I was saying "How to think up an unusual plot for an art stealing story" and then you say "Stealing great pieces of art is an awful, terrible thing to do."

Exactly.  It makes an interesting story.  And it's way better than resolving things through words.

Although an incredibly clever plan coming together can often be more exciting to read than an action scene.

Yes.  I agree, but that's also better than "Okay, I'm sorry I was mean.  Let's be friends!"

Practice makes perfect.  Look it up (you don't need to learn much) and then write a few.  Trust me, it works wonders.

And he thrust! The mysterious figure was good. He blocked and returned that thrust with vengeance unequaled. I stepped back, his parry taking me by surprise. I circled slowly looking for an opening. I thrust a quick left to his rib. He parried and I heard the clang of steel on steel. He was slowly forcing me into a corner. There was no escape. He raised his sword for one blow to finish me, the last member of the order of Pheonix. I saw my chance. I gave a sigh as if submitting. But then I lunged, oh and how I lunged with all the power I could.

Re: How do you write a sword fight?

I fail at them, to be honest. That's why two of my characters don't have swords. Xb

I would recommend watching swordplay in different movies. Lord of the Rings is a good start. Watch how they move and watch the way the swords are used. Imagine yourself as one of them, and come up with what you feel. Hear. Taste. See. Start writing it down. Don't use terms that are often used, use things that no one would expect you to use.

Remember, show don't tell.

Similar to boxing I think... uppercuts, downstrokes, swipes, thrusts, parries, blocks, clashes, retreats, attacks etc.

Re: How do you write a sword fight?

Copy the master: Shakespeare killed Macbeth off stage xD

Jokes aside, Tolkien's skirmish in Moria (Balin's tomb) only lasts about two pages, and much of that is still talking, description, or other non-violent action.  In short, I'm not sure how long you can draw out a duel without sounding repetitive.  By the second time Darryl dodges Paul's thrust, it is probably time to wrap it up.  On top of that, most duels in real life do not last for very long.  Obviously if your duelers are protected by armor it may take several blows to finally dispatch one or the other, but simply filling your pages with blood and gore, no matter how skillfully written, takes away from the story after a certain point.

Re: How do you write a sword fight?

A drew his sword, and B, with a shaky hand, did also.
They glared at each other, hatred in A's eyes, fear in B's.
"I'll make you pay!" A said.
"Pay for what?" replied B. "What did I do?" B put his head down, trying to keep A from seeing him choke back tears.
"My wife... you KILLED HER!"
B lifted his head. Out of anger, he lifted his sword, saying, "I LOVED HER! WHY WOULD I DO THAT?!" A smiled. He had B right where he wanted him.
"I know you loved her. But I had her. She was MINE. You couldn't bear that."
B blushed, then clenched his jaw. He swung. The sword nearly hit A in the face.
There was a clang, a sound of metal hitting metal. A and B were trying their best. A wanted B to pay for what he did, and in his anger pinned him down on the ground.
B thrashed around until he got so tired he could barely see straight. As A retracted the sword, a single tear shed from B's eye. A swung down the sword, puncturing B in the heart. With that, A said, "You belong to the devil now."

Mikhael stared at Daniel, his rapier drawn and a sneer distorting Mikhaels' face. Finally it was time to avenge his father. Daniel smirked.
"Finally you come. I was waiting for you," Daniel drew his rapier, its blade gleaming in the faint torchlight. "Let us finish this matter of revenge."
Mikhael stood in a fighting stance, "En Garde" He pronounced, saying the words that killed thousands of men and brought honor to many Spaniards.
The two men met in the middle of the room, clashing and growling like mad dogs over a bone. Mikhael's sword, Montoya, clanged into Daniel's sword, Rugen. The swords attacked each other like they were free of their masters, for when they were forged, their cores were the polar opposite and to keep the balance of honor equal, they must duel every hundred years.
Mikhael danced around Daniel, stabbing and slashing, only to be parried by Rugen. Daniel swirled and twisted around Montoya, saving himself by a few centimeters.
