So whenever I saw my projects hit the front page or hit the top twenty in Top-Viewed it wasn't a sign that of being well-known on the main site?    Although I guess that has somewhat diminished since moderation does eat up my time for making Scratch projects and leisurely site usage.   

I think it's possible for people to be popular or at least fairly well-known on the main site and the forums. For example everyone here on the main site know of 08jackt but I think most people would also agree he's known on the forums as well, I wouldn't say his popularity is excluded to the main site only.

I believe a lot of it has to do with which part of the site is being used often by a person. If a person rarely uses the forum but the main site, they're not going to be recognized in the forum community very well. Likewise, if someone uses the forums a lot and not the main site, they're not going to be known on the main site. If they use both the site and the forums, then they're going to be recognized in both places (speaking of which, a good tip for those who want people to look at your projects: comment on projects and comment on the forums! It's the best way to get exposure!    )
