Okay, first of all, I haven't seen any topics being closed that I thought shouldn't have been. So, if you could give me some links, I might reconsider some parts of this.
The mods are volunteers that are giving up their own time to help the scratch community, they're not being paid to do it but are still trying to do the best they can. When a topic comes up that could result in a flame war, the mods have to make a decision about closing it. If you think about it, they don't really have much to help them make that decision, they can see what you've written but it is often difficult to tell whether you're calmly writing a response or getting really angry. Also, I highly doubt the mods are closing topics just for the fun of it as that would be abusing their duty as a moderator. So I think you're being a bit harsh as they're giving up their own time and trying to help :\
You have also stated that "debates" are often closed. This is because mods want to close things before they turn into an argument with people saying things they shouldn't. Prevention is better than cure so it kind of makes sense why they might do that.
The guidelines for the miscellaneous forum says:
Don't create topics that have a strong likelihood of creating arguments
So the actual rules are to not make topics that could easily turn into an argument.
Why is this? I'm sure you all know that there are many different people on scratch, and some people may be less mature and unable to control themselves as well as others. If such a person found one of these "debate" threads, it could quickly turn into an argument with people just insulting each other and if there are no mods online, it could easily turn really nasty. But don't think I'm calling anyone immature, many scratchers have proved that they are perfectly capable of having a contolled debate. If, however, they were allowed to do this on scratch, I think you can work out what would happen. So, as mature people, we need to take responsibilty for our posts and ensure that they won't cause arguments or upset anyone who reads them.
Of course, that doesn't mean you can't have debates because they do help people to become aware of the veiws of others and are a part of life. If you wish to, there is nothing to stop you taking your debates elsewhere, that means you will stay out of trouble on scratch and prevent other scratchers getting into trouble. Not all debates will turn flamey, and the mods need to respect that. You said there are "many different people" on Scratch. I agree. But this is what makes different opinions and it's important to voice and debate opinions.
That is true, but I don't think it's a good idea to wait for a thread to become flamey before it is closed. Plus, some people may not be able to handle debate topics in a sensible way, especially younger people who often don't know how to reply to things politely. But, as I said before, I haven't seen any topics that have been closed unfairly so some specific examples would be helpful.

Well I saw it. Looking at the options, I don't think anyone has made that connection that, since Scratch is open to all ages and backgrounds, the rules are stricter here than on other websites largely for that reason. It's kind of like how different places have different rules because of the purpose of usage of that location - for example, libraries will have strict rules on noise level because it's mainly a place of reading and studying whereas a public park is less likely to have that kind of rule since it's just a place to hang out and talk and play. So if you want to talk loudly, then you don't go to a library, you go to the park (and if you go to the library and talk loudly or loud enough to disturb people, then expect to be reprimanded by the library staff). Not to mention I'd certainly like for people to imagine the material that mods had to go through before the Miscellaneous Guidelines were officially put up and the rules were a little more lax - Miscellaneous wasn't a pretty sight back then, the past kind of gives some more insight in understanding why mods do what they do whenever a certain situation is encountered.
Although, at the same time, I can't take the poll very seriously. For one thing its way too open it's way too open and subject to being trolled by outside users who might not even go on Scratch anymore or who have been banned from Scratch and has a beef with the moderators. Two, personally, I don't think it has all the possible options (if there was an option called "other", I would have ticked that off and typed in that mods only close debates topics when they start to fail to become a good debate anymore and become a negative argument and exhibit behavior that goes against Community and Miscellaneous Guidelines).

I've used these polls a long time. And unfortunately you can't have an "other" option because people type in inappropriate things...

Well, I closed that one down because I felt that it was getting overly personal. People were starting to get insulting towards each other. I thought I'd cool things down for a while - I was waiting to see if anybody wanted to argue for a reopen. And now you have, so I'll reopen it.

I'm not saying they don't. However, they might not know a good way to reply to a topic so their posts may seem rude or insensitive.

Oh yeah, and just about to look at the poll results again.
What emo originally meant isn't an opinion. If you look up "emo" on Wikipedia, it clearly says "It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace".
If you are seriously calling Fall Out Boy hardcore punk in a non-sarcastic statement, then you don't know what hardcore punk is. Although, My Chemical Romance's first album was post-hardcore, it's a different kind that's very far from the mid-80's emotional hardcore bands. And in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, they moved away from post-hardcore to more of a pop-punk/alternative rock style, with the style only being shown in one or two songs. And no way is The Black Parade or Danger Days hardcore
But the word shouldn't have existed anyway. I mean there are musicians in all genres that are emotional, so why did they do it for hardcore? Metallica had some pretty emotional lyrics, so why didn't they create "emotional metal". Tupac had some pretty emotional lyrics, so why didn't they create "emotional hip hop". It's just freaking ridiculous. I wish the term a slow and painful death.

i really don't understand why people think topics are getting closed for no reason
while some debate is healthy, they're really just trying to prevent flame wars and clean stuff up
they are volunteering their time, and they have good judgement
