Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that was the problem. :S Sure, I'll be waiting for the recording. ^^

[two octaves]
Please ignore the terrible singing, I've just eaten a LOT of cheese and couldn't be asked to retake. As I say in the recording, the second example is less comfortable to sing for me, it's at the peak of my natural range before I go falsetto, I think it sounds less natural but you may disagree.

I believe the actual octave of the song matches the second example, but the first one does sound a lot better, so I think we should do the song in that octave regardless.

Alright, I agree, I think it is in the second example octave, this is the problem with being a bass
I'm at work tomorrow until about 7:00pm my time, which is about 10 for you so I don't know if I'll get to speak to you tomorrow. I might try a recording that's better than this one at some point tomorrow though:
quick experiment
That's in the raised key with no sound sampling to remove hiss etc. I think I'm flat here and there too (especially harmony last part :$ ewww) but that's following the notes you gave in the midi project.

There's one thing though - I am by no means a low singer, so I might not (actually, after receiving your recording, I am sure that I will not) be able to sing my lowest parts if we do it in that octave. But here's an idea - how about we do it in the lower octave, but raise the key so that you can sing your lowest note? That way we won't have to change anything, and I will be able to sing my part.
I just did a quick test in Scratch and it appears that we will need to raise it by about 7 half-tones, if I didn't mess anything up.
By the way, that sounds great. ^^ Your bass is awesome.
I'm going to bed now, so good night!

That sounds like a good compromise, it would bring me up to my higher end, freeing up the low notes I can't reach in the chorus without making you cause birds to explode as you struggle for the highs! As long as it doesn't detract too much quality from the original It's a great idea!
*goes and listens to it in Scratch with 7 half-tones up*
The flying pickets who did the version we're using didn't write it, by the way, It wasn't originally acapella but sung by some singer lady. I prefer this version though

Yup, 7 tones up sits pretty comfortably with me. I worry we might lose that wonderful bass feel but we'll see how it goes!

True about the bass part - but for me, the higher octave version is better, frankly.
I just listened to it in in Scratch and I thought that perhaps we could raise it just by one more note? My 55 in "Love is blind" sounds dry. I can still sing it, though. Or maybe that's because of my throat?
I'll try to record it tomorrow to give you an idea. ^^

Lol, you're worried about losing the bass feel, and I'm worried about losing the soprano feel. xD To each their own.

Haha, great! Well work is done and I'm FREE!!!!
Like the sig update
We can raise it one more note if you like, in practice that sounds fine, after I've eaten something I'll try recording my parts in the 8-note-up key you suggest and see how that sounds
I love the way we refer to all the notes by their Scratch Number

Great! The fact I can no longer comfortably sing the harmony bodes well, if you ask me, but the two parts I have are very comfortable and actually sound a lot better IMO than the lower one I did yesterday!
listen to +8 keyed Blowing Away Intro V1

Done! Here's the MIDI of the first verse and chorus: (link)
My gut told me there are actually 4 voices in the first part of the chorus instead of 3, with the fourth voice following the same melody as the bass but one octave higher. I added it and the MIDI sounded a lot closer to the original than without it. See what you think. ^^

Great! Did you listen to the recording in post #60? I think it sounds better

I did, it sounded great.

That sounds brilliant! Very natural and all the notes sound right
How's you're voice? We could have a go at the first verse V1 recording today, maybe! I notice the recording is in -4 key, are we still setting that to 8?

-4 is actually the +8 version, because we changed it by one octave as well (aka -12), and thanks! ^_^
I've been taking medicine but my throat is still sore. D: It's not really severe though, so I'll still try the recording today. ^^ I'll do it this evening, because my voice always gets better later in the day after all the medicine I take.

Alright
My voice usually sounds better in the morning when I first wake up, the deeper notes sound richer
In terms of recording, how do you plan to do yours? If you send them to me I can patch them together in Audacity, unless you want me to send my parts to you...

I don't think it really matters, but I was intending to send you my parts, so I guess I'll do that. ^^

:S I'm ashamed to say I can't make a recording today - I had to do a lot of stuff and I ended up being busy till now, and it's already too late to do a recording, because everybody's asleep. Sorry about that, I didn't quite expect it. xD

Okay, I'm going to record now. xD Do you have any tips for that? I've never recorded before and my recordings don't sound right... What's the distance I should keep from the mic? And also I somehow can't figure out how loud I should sing for the song - I think it should be pretty quiet, am I right? ^^
Offline
Make it as loud and clear as you can, I can reduce the volume easily but not gain it! Keep mic sensitivity low so that background hiss is minimal and keep close to the mic but avoid causing pops when you pronounce P's caused by blowing into the mic

That's odd, when I move away from my mic it makes my recording sound more like your recordings.
When I move closer (to being about 5cm from the mic), my voice stands out too much because it seems too close to the listener (and it's not because of the volume), that's with me singing quietly.

Okay, I finally got it to sound more like I wanted it to.
I recorded the first verse and two versions of the chorus - one is a more loud throat voice while the other is a quieter voice (which is the more natural way of singing for me). See which one you like more. ^^
(first verse)
(chorus A)
(chorus B)
It's quite messy though, especially the chorus. xD I haven't had any singing practice for more than 4 months, so this was really good exercise for me. ^^
