it seems to be a more lighthearted environment since then

    they had more serious conversations back then

Really? I see a lot less than before, and most subjects of flamebaits/flamewars are more easily controlled now than it was in the past. 

Any online community is subject to change due to the influx of new members that come in and the outflux of members that leave and the influence of the current members still around. Chances are that the Scratch community will change again in the future because of these continually changing dynamics. ^^

I agree with you there. There were more spammers & trolls (SSoS springs to mind...) but now they've pretty much all been banned or got bored of wasting their time trolling here. :3
I actually like the atmosphere now everyone's forgotten about the big MC/MLP dispute (you know, 'omhmajeez there's so much poniez heer right naow and i dun liek MC theres too much of ittt!!!111!eleven!'). I hope I didn't just remind everyone to rant about it ;D
