Infinite Lifespan?

You know how when your body gets a virus, it reproduces cells to replace the ones lost? If your body can do that, why can it not do that indefinitely, and keep you alive forever? The answer lies in the cells themselves. The DNA in your cells is not a closed loop, but open, with something (I forget what it's called XD) at the end. The offspring of this cell has shorter somethings(XD). Every time the cell reproduces, this gets shorter, until it is almost nonexistent. This stops the cell from reproducing. In short, this is a pre-programmed lifespan.

Also, there are some cells, which, when reaching a certain point, never reproduce again, such as brain cells. This is because memories are stored either in neurological pathways or in the cells themselves(I think the former).

Discuss this and other biological thought prompts.

But would you really want to live forever?

That's not exactly the point. The point is, could you live forever?

Re: Infinite Lifespan?

Through genetic engineering, you COULD live forever.

In other words, make it so that the end for a cell never shortens, and make your body produce LOTS of stem cells.

Re: Infinite Lifespan?

Well, this theory isn't very realistic, take in mind there ARE other ways of dying.

I like the concept though.

You just stay in a perfectly sanitized room with altered cells!

Re: Infinite Lifespan?

Yeah, if you could keep cells from slowing their reproduction down as you get older, you could, at least, live longer (barring other causes of death).

Yawn.

Nope.  Read Fablehaven (book 5).  Or any other story with immortality.  There's always some immortal guy who wants to die.  Count me among those guys.
