blocky pixel art like the original mario, is 8-bit. this: Army of Trolls is not 8-bit, but is pixel art.

Actually, that's not correct. 8-bit graphics means that each pixel is represented by one byte (8 bits). In 8-bit graphics, the maximum amount of colors is 256.

I think that it's just huge-pixel-based art. I think the name comes from its likeness to the bad quality of the old 8-bit stuff (like Atari, I think, and maybe the really early computers).

8 bit art is usually considered blocky because of the limited colors and lack of transparency for anti-aliasing and such. The resolution could be the same as now, but the images would still be blocky.
