Re: Windows 8 Developer Preview Will be out at 8 PT!

It's supposed to be able to go onto a USB drive.  I mean put the whole OS onto a USB drive bring with you and use on OS X, Ubuntu, etc.

My VirtualBox is the latest version and Win8 Guru Meditation'd it! D:

On win 8 right click on it and choose settings
System ---> Motherboard --> Enable IO APIC
Tick all boxes in the other tabs.
In display enable 3D features and 2d if you want to.

Ah, that was probably it. Thanks! I'll test it when I get back to the comp with Win8 on it (this weekend).

No luck D:
I tried checking the IO APIC and the 3D/2D acceleration, but the exact same thing happened. Any help?

Re: Windows 8 Developer Preview Will be out at 8 PT!

Hmm. I installed the VBox Extension Pack and checked the USB 2.0 driver box in the Win8 VM's settings, and it did the exact same thing, except VBox didn't throw a Guru Meditation...weird.
What happens is that Win8 says "Loading files..." and the progress bar fills up like normal. Then, after a few seconds to a minute on a black screen, it says "Windows(R) Developer Preview". Then, it throws an errors saying the computer needs to restart. The error code is as follows:
0x0000000A
Parameters:
0xFFFFFFE6
0x0000001F
0x00000000
0x81B4663B
The error is redrawn line by line, then wiped and redrawn again. After it does this a few times, some of the characters turn into unidentified ASCII characters (the squares), the line saying to hold down the power button is missing, and only the first 4 letters of the word "Parameters" are visible. The error is redrawn a few more times, then the final time it is drawn the slowest, and VBox throws a Guru Meditation...except it didn't this time. Really strange.

Yawn.

Now that I've done some research, Win8 might actually be a good idea- for a tablet or smartphone!  Total fail for desktops, or, in my case, laptops.

Just heard you can change the desktop back to look like Windows 7.
Although I think avatars coming to it is very stupid.

Yeah, it sucks without some sort of touch.

As for everyone who's getting problems, I installed it on VBox just fine! You really need those ticks ticked though if you want it to work. Plus you'll need AT LEAST 1GB of RAM for 32-bit and AT LEAST 2GB for x64.

The ticks you need to tick are on the Processor page.
Enable IO APIC
Enable Nested Paging
Enable VT-x/AMD-V
Enable PAE/NX
All the rest should be unticked on that page (except for the boot options).

I recommend you give it 20GB of VDI, and as much video memory as you can.

Now, most importantly, you'll need virtualization enabled on your BIOS! I already had it enabled from my (not completely legal) Mac tests, but I've read that without it the OS fails completely in VBox.

Good luck to anyone who's trying! The OS is ok I guess, only problem is it now lacks an easy way to open programs.

Yeah, I've tried running (legal) Mac OS X in VBox, but it pretty much failed.  tongue
Anyway, I'll try those things on the Win8 VM, LS97.
Edit: Dang! All I can check are IO APIC and PAE/NX! D:

just because it looks fancy and junk doesn't make it good

i have seen then and used them
i know how powerful it is

and i hate it
every little bit of it
i will stay with ubuntu and xp, okay?

i don't care about how powerful a computer is
i don't know what makes it a good computer for me, but they just have a certain feel and style

macs and windows vista-8 just don't please me at all
they don't seem computer enough
at all

i don't believe that any computer company ever wants to go back to how xp was
i may use a more recent os if they do, but they won't
so i'm using xp and that's what i like

and ubuntu too

Most developers are actually really not happy about this change, and I can't blame them. They've spent decades building upon the classic tools for building Windows applications and all the intertwining elements (.NET, C, etc) and now they have to start from scratch.

I'm not saying a fresh start is all bad (you have to move on eventually) but it certainly is going to make things difficult for quite a few years until everyone can make the jump.

If you're talking about Chrome OS, that's different. It's intended to be a lightweight OS with web apps, not a full-blown OS for power users.  hmm

Yes, in my opinion, the more "traditional" languages have definite advantages. JS, HTML5, etc were never meant to be for desktop applications. Regardless of what some people are able to do with them, they're just not there. Sure, they're great for a neat little news app or something, but what about applications like graphics editors and games?

You really have to understand just how big of a deal it is for major developers, and I'm seriously concerned that this will slow development of applications. Until the majority of users make the move to Windows 8, there's going to be a lot of hesitation from developers to write everything in this new system, and they'll have to either choose between developing natively for Windows 7 and below or Windows 8. Since programs written for Windows 7 will run in 8, I'm guessing that we'll see a significant period of time before a large number of apps become Windows 8 native.
