Links to Member-created Websites

Please use the new, simpler procedure.

It's easy and educational to make your own websites, blogs, forums, chat rooms, private messaging systems, and so on.  However, please remember that you are responsible for all material that you link to in Scratch comments and forum posts.

That means that, if you are going to link to it from Scratch, everything on your site should be appropriate for all-ages and basically follow the same guidelines as the Scratch site.  This can be hard to guarantee if your website allows other people to post things, using comments or other methods.   Please see  LS97's great guide for some tips on making a successful site.

If your website doesn't allow anybody to add stuff like comments - or anything that is added is reviewed personally by you very quickly, and you are the only person who controls the site, great!  Feel free to link to it from Scratch - your site doesn't need permission and doesn't have to be on the list of approved sites below.

Anything else, we ask that you *NOT* advertise or link to your sites from Scratch until you have cleared it with the Scratch Team.  The team is going to require that your site has met the following conditions:

1. has been in existence for at least 3 months
2. has established standards and moderation policies that are consistent with Scratch
3. has good security practices to prevent trolling or hijacking.
4. does not have chatting
5. has public visibility of any public added content (so you don't have to be logged in to see forum posts, for example).

Note that chat rooms are never approved because of the difficulty of moderating them.

Want to add your forum / community to the list of ok sites? Post on this thread, if you meet the requirements above.  Please don't include the link to your site in the post however.  After you post, use the Report link to give us the link and let us know that you have posted.  Thanks!

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

A few tips if you are making your own online community:
1. Choose a password that is really hard to guess and _don't share it._
2. Don't give admin powers to anyone who shares their passwords. In fact, try to keep the number of people with admin / mod powers as small as possible.
3. Before you believe that someone is who they say they are, ask them to leave a comment confirming their identity on one of your Scratch projects. i.e.

Person on your site: "Hey, I'm soAndso from Scratch!"
You: "Ok! Go leave a comment confirming that you are you on one of my projects on Scratch!"

You: *Checks project, replies to confirm that they are asking for an account on your site* Ok!

Some basic tricks like this will help keep the drama / hackery / trolling to a minimum. After your site has proven to be consistently secure and respectful for a long time, you can ask us to allow linking from Scratch.

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

Hello! I would like to apply for an exemption for the site Mod Share.

The site has been up for more than 4 months now (started on April the 23rd).
It has 54 registered users (of which 21 are active and have shared at least one project).

The site is governed by its community guidelines, privacy policy, warranty, copyright and projects shared are optionally protected under these licences.

Some basic info is also found in the starter's guide.

Thanks!

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

I would like to register Gopher Programming forums. I have two moderators, flashgocrazy and casserly (My best friend in real life). The link is http://www.gopherprogramming.com/forums.html/. It is checked every day, and we have great ban and user control. I haven't got any issues so far, so it's safe! But it is made with Pun BB

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

Hi, Paddle! I want to have an exemption for http://modcentral.comuv.com/.
I am not the admin of the website, but I am apart of the staff.  wink

ModCentral is a website that is for sharing, collaborating, and discussing modifications of scratch. The current staff is SeptimusHeap, TheSuccessor, and ProgrammingFreak.

We have been very tight on spamming and do not allow it. We have 19 active users and are ready for more.

Thank you for your time.  wink

But what about a forum where there aren't many people, because the forum's made for Scratchers, but can't get Scratchers because of this?  tongue

(I'm not planning on making a forum, just curious)

Sounds good, keep up the good work!

webs.com is another hosting site you might want to censor.

Can you have a website made by you on weebly? I have a site, XUDI.weebly.com, and if you can't can I have some suggestions to improve it so it meets the requirements?

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

At last I understand why Cheddargirl blocked something yesterday! It's a new rule! Let's celebrate! (not)

So, basically, I can only post links to my website, if they don't have chats or forums, or if those chats or forums are properly and thoroughly moderated? Nice!  big_smile

I think (Better to ask the scratch team) if the content is Scratch appropriate then sure but don't be too spammy about it. The linked sites should benifit the Scratch community in some way.

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

It's really easy and educational to make your own forums, chat rooms, private messaging systems, virtual private networks, and so on.  And it can be fun to interact with your friends using these tools.  However, because these sites may not be monitored or may not share the same values as the Scratch site, there is no guarantee that material on such sites is suitable for all ages.  For this reason, we ask that you *NOT* advertise or link to these sites from the Scratch forums.

To help enforce this request, we have added the names of some popular websites used for creating shared spaces to our censored word list:

punbb-hosting (the only one added so far)

Exemptions to this policy may be made for sites that have been in existence for at least 6 months and have established standards and moderation policies that are consistent with Scratch.  Please contact the Scratch Team if you would like to apply for an exemption.

+1

my Quodoligy forum was meant to be an educational place for younger scratchers to learn about science. it wasn't really for chat rooms and stuff like that.

I suggest that you contact your friends on Scratch individually with comments (use word-of-mouth advertising) until you have your site up and running smoothly with trust-worthy mods and admins.

As long as there is no way for your visitors to add inappropriate stuff...and the content you add is appropriate, it should be fine  smile

Does the same apply if the site has a forum for a few people (just the development team) and only I can activate accounts?

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

Say you make a site that directly ties into Scratch and it is impossible to spam it, troll it, etc. I mean it literally doesn't have any moderation because it is impossible to post something not related to Scratch on it.

Would that be a good site?

Re: Links to Member-created Websites

This is for borregoworld.yolasite.com, I will admit it isn't a licensed website or whatever they call them, but it is merely a showcase for my work and anyone else who wants to upload their stuff onto it. It allows power-point apps and modded-scratch files that have to be compressed with winrar because they're so big (not many sites allow .rar files) can you please allow my links and change the comments your moderator has adjusted please.

punbb-hosting (is it really censored?)

Oh, and some other ideas:
PunBB Hosting, pun-bb hosting, PunBB-Hosting (just in case people type differently)
Palringo
Chatango
QQ (some chatting program commonly used in China, but some forum users put their QQ ID in their sig, so probably not)
