I'm interested in why some topics blow up more then others. This topic will probably get a page or two of chat, then fade away. But why is that? The subject? The phrasing? The title?
Discuss. Why do you click on certain topics?

Sometimes I think that if a topic is too narrow it doesn't last as long because it gets worn out. If it's wider you get lots of things to talk about that are still related, so it lasts longer.

The more specific a topic is, the less posts it receives. And the username also effects whether you click on the topic or not

I think subject matter might also play into effect aside from topic range. If not many people know much about a particular topic or don't like it, they're less likely to click on it. For example: a "favorite food dish" subject is more likely to last longer than "favorite math topic" subject since most people have a favorite food dish and not everyone likes math.

And, the title should be specific so people know what it's about.
"Help" or "I have a problem" is not going to get as much clicks as "My Scratch program won't open."

I think the title has to be intriguing.

But what makes a title intriguing? I think grammar, spelling, and capitalization have to factor in

Dunno. I've only had two really popular topics.

1. A wide discussion that most people will find interesting and engage in/relate to
2. A long, grammatically-correct title
3. A user with a good reputation for creating decent topics
My topics always seem to do well, not sure why :L
Oh, and I hate it when the same user posts a string of topics, this is Scratch, not a place for Twitter updates every 10 minutes ¬_¬

Has anybody noticed how threads with emoticons in the title blow up with posts?

nope
I think it has to do with emphasis, design, and mystery

I just made a topic 5 minutes ago with an emoticon as the title. Everybody is replying at the same time
