I have no ideas. I’m making a platformer (no scrolling) and I’m working on level 19, on this level, you will be upgraded with a weapon. Preferably, a weapon that could be upgraded later on. (i.e. A sword. You could get wood, then metal, then diamond, or something.) But don’t say sword. Because I am also making a DIFFERENT game that uses the sword.
And don’t say guns. I prefer not to use guns because I have seen little kids get upset when people use guns in games.
So what weapon should I use for the game, that isn’t a gun or a sword.

Does a crossbow/bow & arrow count as a gun?

Maybe some kind of magic staff?

Didn't Henley say NO GUNS?
Anyway, I say a normal Short Stick. However, get something like a magic token, and you can upgrade it into a Wand, or get wood, and you could use the wood to upgrade it to a Long Stick, and if you get a magic token then you can change it into a magic Staff. Or, if you get a string before upgrading the Short Stick to anything else, you can use it to make a Bow. Short/Long Stick= close-ranged items, Long Stick slightly more long-ranged and powerful than the other. Wand/Staff: Magic spell-summoning items. They can cast different spells than the other. Bow: A long-ranged item that can shoot infinite arrows (not all on the screen at once, of course).
Can you come up with other upgrades?
Taking trees to a WHOLE new level; like the prime ingredient in Paper Mario (other than ULTIMATE AWESOMENESS); now that's PaperMario123.
