I made a few mesh projects before, and I wanted to activate Mesh to play a mesh game with a friend (which was in 2010). I set up all of the things for him, and suddenly, I noticed how difficult it was just to activate a tiny little feature in Scratch. I was wondering if you could activate Mesh without shift-clicking the R in the logo like you can in BYOB....?
EDIT: Or is that going to happen in Scratch 2.0?

Yes there is.
I think it was like that in 1.4 because it was still a beta feature... I'd like it to become official in 2.0.

Mesh was originally an experimental feature for Scratch. It wasn't ever intended to be a common feature. I believe Scratch 2.0 might have a better version of Mesh, or something else better than Mesh entirely. The Scratch Team I heard is working on a way to easily make High Score lists with "Cloud Variables". Though I've only heard it's an idea and it's still in progress.
You can see some of the discussion here.

That's only beta versions.
