Using bootcamp to install windows on a mac

I'm going to get a Mac, but I want the windows copy of GIMP and Word because they are better than their Mac couterparts.

So I might use bootcamp to install windows on the mac.

So will it work with a copy of Vista I have on a CD for a windows I already own?

Also, how will it work? Will I be able to choose when I turn on the computer, which OS I want to use on that particular day?

I'm confused, so if someone could help me out, that would be great! Thanks!  big_smile

I don't really know how to install it, but once you've done that, you'll have to go to the program that has Windows in it to get there.

Oh, the glory of it all - adorable cat people dressed as video game characters!

Re: Using bootcamp to install windows on a mac

Boot Camp for Lion only works with Windows 7, but if you get Parallels Desktop you can run Vista in a window on your Mac.

If you are having trouble with simple counting, use the following mnemonic device: 1 comes before 2 comes before 5,280 comes before 523,860,759 comes after the square root of -153 comes before π. This will make your previous counting problems seem like no big deal.

Re: Using bootcamp to install windows on a mac

I don't know the details, but just run it and when you start up your computer, there will be a Windows user as well as your current one.  If you can't see it, log out (it's in the apple menu- the apple icon in the far left corner of the titlebar, which is the bar on the top).  There's a tutorial on it at www.apple.com.  Called 'Running Windows on a Mac'.

Re: Using bootcamp to install windows on a mac

It turns out I have to buy a new copy of windows  sad

But Lion is working well for me so it doesn't really matter... I like it more than Windows 7 actually  big_smile

Only problem is that I'm not used to it, the Microsoft Word and Powerpoint isn't good, GIMP isn't fully supported and Paint.NET won't install  tongue

Thanks for the advice guys!  big_smile
