What's YOUR Scratch Story?

Here's my Scratch Story:

Okay, I found out about Scratch when I was looking for an easy game programmer. Well, actually, I was originally looking for a Mario level editor. Here's how it happened: Mario Forever was too gitchy and The Lunar Magic level editor was too complicated. I was looking ALL over for game programmers, but all of them either needed to be bought, or were too complicated.

Then, one day, I typed into Google: "Mario Maker" and sure enough, there was a Scratch project called "Mario Maker". At first, I didn't know what Scratch was, so I just skipped right over it. But when I went back to it, I saw that it was programmed by a normal person like me! When I figured out that I could make games like that, I decided to give Scratch a try... and at my first sight, I knew I had found the game programmer I had been looking for!

At first, it wasn't all that easy... I needed to learn about the blocks, scripts, and sprites... but I got the hang of it! Now, I make great projects, create little-kid games for my baby cousin, have plenty of friends on Scratch, and run my own Scratch Website! I love Scratch, and I think that everyone who wants to make games should download it! And I am very proud to say...
SCRATCH ON!  big_smile

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

Well, I used to LOVE to read Popular Science, especially the DIY (do-It-Yourself). Well, I saw in an old issue that there was designing your own stuff. Naturally, I asummed you would be using the computer (duh, it's Pop Sci). I saw that they had something about programming in the ocrner. They said Scratch is very simple, so I tried it, it seemed to hard,I saw they recommended something simpler (it was you have your picture that they make into a game) so I went back to Scratch, and, well, here I am

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

I went to a video game camp,(I'm serious, they had real game designers) and after the summer was over, they invited me back over the school year (only on holidays). They asked if we wanted to make our own games, we agreed (since games are awesome) and they introduced us to scratch. We came back this summer, and made 2 games over the course of a week: Donkey Kong and "Get off the Lawn"

Heres the account we used: http://scratch.mit.edu/users/nmsugamelab
I worked on Donkey Kong with two other people. I was the artist. (keep in mind that the final version was not released on scratch.)

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

Amazingly, my story is kind of a mashup between Bluestribute's story and Half-Wolf-Leader's.  I went to a video-game-MAKING camp, where they used something called Stagecast. I got frustrated with it and so scoured the Web, books, anything I could get my hands on that had even the slightest hint about game making. Then, one day, I picked up one of my dad's Popular Science Magazines, and read about Scratch.

From there it's history.

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

I was at school, and bored, and right next to a computer. I saw a cat, and clicked it. I had a little bit of fun. I got very sick soon after. I had nothing to do. So, I googled Scratch to see if I could get it. I got it, started playing with it, and have been unable to stop since. Scratch is one of the most fun things I have ever tried!

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

Joeyman showed me Scratch. I liked it, and now, joeyman helps me make projects. I just don't put them on the internet. One of my projects is: Danny's Maze Game Joeyman posted it on the internet, because at that time... I didn't own a Scratch account.  smile   smile   smile

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

I wrote my first computer game back in the early 80s on a VIC-20 when I was 7 years old or so, and I wanted my 7 year old daughter to enjoy programming the way I did.  We went through LOGO, Squeak and a few others before finding Scratch, and now it's our favorite.

Runs pretty well on Linux under WINE, too...

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

In January 2008, my dad sent me an e-mail providing a link to Scratch. I was into animation and had actually won an animation contest on CBC (true story). And I was sick of using movie maker and drawing animations frame by frame. My dad installed Macromedia Flash 8 and I had a bit of trouble with it. Then he installed Scratch and I started to get the hang of it. That's my Scratch story.

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

In a nutshell: I was searching for some way to teach a little bit of programming to my 14-year-old and 8-year old over the summer, and I saw a post on Slashdot about Scratch around the time I decided that either Python or Ruby would be a painless and fun introduction to programming. And here we are...

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

Here's mine:

I was programming a legal 'expert system' in Squeak for a set of lectures when Scratch was featured in the Squeak news with a notice that there was no way to reach the Squeak side of it. Since until then (and, in fact, still) I hadn't seen any 'real' applications made with Squeak I downloaded Scratch just to look at it. I was completely stunned by the professional appearance of the window and didn't even look at the blocks or the projects. Instead I was captivated by the 3d effect of the tab-buttons (where you switch from scripts to costumes and sounds), because in current Squeak there was no way to specify such tab-buttons to be 'outset'. I was so curious how the Scratch developers programmed these buttons that I started to fool around with Scratch aiming to cause an error message that would perhaps let me break into the source code. Well, I didn't succeed for a long time. Instead I found out what you can do with blocks and that really got me interested...

Much later, of course, long after I had finished my own application I found out that Scratch's tab buttons are not even 'programmed' to appear outset, but using a painted skin, something so simple and clever it didn't even occur to me before  smile

Re: What's YOUR Scratch Story?

My youngest son actually showed me Scratch...he learned about it at his Computer Club.  I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread and started messing around with it right away.  I was kind of hoping he would enjoy it too and he did play with it a bit.  But I'm the one who got hooked!
