Switching servers

Hello, we have switched one of the components of the Scratch website to a new server. You should NOT see anything different, but if you see anything unusual please let us know!

Thanks.

Maybe it'd be worth mentioning which component to look for unusual stuff on that... Idk, unless it affects the whole website of course.  tongue

It might be worth knowing which component it is so that we can pummel it with attention and testing!

Re: Switching servers

It's probably as part of the development of Scratch 2.0. The site is changing s lot, or so I hear... What's the progress on 2.0 anyway, andresmh?

Re: Switching servers

Ah, so I'm no expert on this (Andres and our server guy do most of this stuff) but I'll tell you what I know.

So - so far just Varnish was moved.

Varnish is an http accelerator that caches things. So it was more like a component that helps serve the whole site was moved (not a section, or certain pages).  Later on they'll be moving the whole application side to a new server. The database has been humming along on its own new server for the past several months.

But anytime something changes, it's good to watch out for glitches. So far this transition has been super smooth though, which is awesome.  smile

Oh, by the way, have you ever thought of trying Linux, or Ubuntu?

Well, you're running it right now, because it's what Scratch is running on.

I wouldn't say we're running linux, I'm not sure if you mean the fact that scratch runs in a virtual machine and that it is running linux (is it?) or whether you mean that the scratch website is run on servers that are running linux (which almost certainly is true).

A few minutes ago, I couldn't get on scratch. It's happened twice in about 2 days, and it lasts around 15 minutes.

This happened to me as well around 45 minutes to an hour or so ago. I went downstairs for a little while, came back, and everything was fine.

It’s, funny because I just switched from AT&T to Comcast, and my internet is faster, so I can’t notice.  lol

Just something wierd to report... sometimes, I get a page saying no information received from server, and then I have to reload to get the page properly... its never happened before, but it's happening quite often lately  hmm

I use ubuntu for everything! It is for sure the best OS for servers.

Recently, the Scratch website has been oddly slow on my computer.  neutral

If it matters, I am using Safari on a Mac Snow Leopard

Re: Switching servers

I'm not sure if this would be related to this, but yesterday there were two, about 30 minute long periods where my I couldn't connect to Scratch. All other websites were working just fine, but when attempting to connect to Scratch it came up with the message "Cannot connect to scratch.mit.edu because the server stopped responding." Any thoughts on what may have happened?  hmm
