scratch ide...

hi.  Scratch has an intuitive feel to the use of it and the visual blocks are great.  I would like to do something similar with an IDE that I am developing.  Would there be any copyright issue that I would have to address to have that constructivist metaphor in the IDE?

Also, as a devloper, would I be able to become involved in the project?  I have some good ideas for an ide and I also have a psychology degree and am a teacher.  I would love to come up with a filter to convert the scratch output to a swf for instance.  I took a look at the .sb file and was expecting it to be a script file but it turned out to be a binary.  I would have preferred to see a script output as then kids would be able to view the script and change it to manipulate the program, giving them a next step to understanding programming.

Either way, it's pretty cool.

Re: scratch ide...

There might be a copyright issue.
And joining the team, the forum isn't the place to ask. Try going to MIT.

Does Scratch Flash Player mean anything to you?

There isn't a copyright on the Blocks thing.  It is research by the MIT media lab and the lifelong kindergarten group.

And the ScratchFlashPlayer is a special kind of swf, and only the scratch team can do it.

Yeah, I'm mostly inactive.  I check in once in a while though.  If you want to contact me, I have a contact form at my website, http://escratch.org

Re: scratch ide...

I don't think the Scratch Team is looking for members right now.
There probably wouldn't be any "copyright" issue--just give credit to Scratch for inspiration. (And using "blocks" to program isn't Scratch-specific either.)

About the "script output" thing--you can shift-click on the File menu in Scratch and click "Write Project Summary..." or "Write Multiple Project Summaries..." to get a textual output of the scripts and project data. It isn't loadable in Scratch, though.

Yawn.

It isn't loadable in Scratch, but it can be interpreted from an external program to convert the project to a different format. I wouldn't bother though, since you can already convert projects to EXE to obtain all of the advantages a common file format can offer.
