Good luck to those who do!

Re: Summer 2011 Scratch Community Moderator Elections: Discussion Thread

Here’s a list of my comments on certain parts of users nominations.
Good speeches, potential mods!

Sunrise-Moon wrote:

Some more advantages in picking me:
- I have lots of free time.
- I already know many of the mod tools, and for the ones I don't know, I'm a quick learner.
- I know when to be serious and when to be silly.
- I visit Misc. the most, and I understand you need nore help moderating Misc.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and good luck to my fellow candidates. :-)

Just wondering, how do you know the mod tools?
Grammar cop alert! How do they need nore help moderating Misc?  tongue
Last line is good.  big_smile

I think that the current moderators have done a great job in keeping this place safe for kids. Oh, how I can imagine what a privilege it would be, too. (I just hope we get a lunch break  tongue  )

I realize the horrible problem of spamming and how it needs to be stopped. And I think that I can help. But do realize, if you're under aged to run, that shouldn't stop you from helping.  wink  We're all in this together!

They sure have! Go mods!  big_smile  I eat at the computer.  tongue
Well said, PF.  I’m underage, but I help a lot with a handy gray link at the bottom right of each post. ;P

If elected, I will moderate Misc. at any chance I get. I already know many of the Misc. dwellers, so it would be easy to trasnsition to moderator. I admit that I am guilty of prowling mostly in the Inspiration & More area of the forums, but I will occasionally wander into the other parts of the forum, especially to answer questions in All About Scratch, look at what other users are sharing in Show & Tell, read up on Announcements, welcome New Scratchers, or make Suggestions on how to improve the Scratch website or program.

I won't go into bragging about myself or tooting my own horn as a way to get myself elected. Instead, I will let you, the community, decide if I would be a good choice for moderator.

Ah, the Misc dwellers. Don’t we all know and like them.  tongue
And according to psychology...  tongue

sparks wrote:

For me, the vibrant community found on this site is the main reason why I'm still with Scratch, the people are helpful, clever and kind in almost all instances and the forums have by far the friendliest atmosphere of any online community I have yet found! It's great to see people clubbing together to solve a problem, or falling over each other to help out a new member and I have always enjoyed being a part of this, answering questions, both advanced and basic and having a laugh on the way!

Being a Scratch community moderator would mean that I could find an excuse to spend even more time on the forums and help out even more people, protecting them from the occasional bad egg and keeping the peace. Those of you who know me on the fora will know that I am always as respectful, helpful and unprejudiced in my posts as possible; being mean to someone who did something wrong does not help them in any way.

You like it when people are annoyed about “Outposted! Outposted!”?
LOL, more time? Yes, I know you as someone like that.  smile

ssss wrote:

I believe that the current moderators are doing a really great job, however, and that even if there wasn't a spot for another moderator the site would be great.  I believe that I could help the miscellanious forum by:
    - Keeping track of when emails are shared.
While it's great people want to communicate, these aren't allowed to be shared
on the scratch fora.  I hope to remove these from posts as soon as I see them.
    - Removing inappropriate language:
        - Let's face it, people avoid the filters.  I hope to keep these posts away
    - Moving threads to the appropriate place:
       - If people request it
       - If it needs moving (Wrong forum?)
    - Closing threads:
        - If it is requested
        - If it is a TBG
        - For removal of flaming?
    - Keeping the miscellanious forum friendly:
        - Removing flamebait
        - Anything to keep it friendly  wink

I will also do this regularly on the other forums.

(Wow, what happened to brief?

Misc is a hard word to spell, isn’t it?
Good list, I agree with them.
El. Oh. El!

(Just so people know, I’m probably not basing my vote on the speeches. I’m not pulling a name out of a hat though.  smile
I will see who, from what I know of them, would be best suited, IMO, for mod.  smile )

You would moderate Misc? This is actually one of the rare times I've seen you of Advanced Topics.  tongue  People can change though.  smile

Maybe in a couple years I'll run for mod... I turn 13 in September but I don't think I'd want to moderate at this time. I'm happy with my current roles.  smile

Where did I use html and where did I say anything about "outposted, outposted"? For that matter, what is outposted?  smile

You raise a valid point, however, I don't spend much time in Misc, but I'm perfectly happy to  smile

Outposted is when someone else answers the question before you. Usually outposting is not more than a couple minutes.

In the T of your acrostic (which is pretty neat BTW), you put an S instead of an A.

To start off, I have participated in all of the Scratch Day events at MIT, and I am an administrator/bureaucrat Scratch Wiki (over 1,200 contributions so far)! In addition, I've been a valuable helper on the Scratch Forums (the one you're looking at right now - over 5,000 non-spam posts!). But most importantly, I have made many different projects (varying from animation to games, even some made in collabs), and have posted 3,000+ of constructive comments on others' projects, giving good feedback. As far as group work experience, I do participate in Prism, a collaboration of 10 scratchers to make high-quality projects.

So why do I specifically want to run for moderator? I feel that despite all of the work of the current moderators, there's still work to be done, and there are many periods of time when I see that no moderators are online to help give feedback and prevent spam on the forums - so I would be a helpful moderator to fill in the gap. In addition, I would serve as a great role model in the community, as I show that even though I have had my mistakes in the past (no bans though), I have gotten better and have regained much of my reputation, and am a very positive Scratcher, giving good advice to Scratchers of all ages and knowledge, with all-around experience.

Also, I am very active on the community usually on at least 1-2 hours each day.

Do you really think you have a high edit count on the wiki? JK, most people don't have even a thousand, much less my 5000! ^^
Yes, I've also noticed lots of times where no mods are on but spammers are. After the first few, I just report that they should ban them.  tongue
I'm often on more, but I shouldn't be.

Don't worry Luc, I'm not trying to put you down. Just my opinions on stuff.  smile
Just wondering; how old are you?

He is an awesome guidance for me, and other people.  He has been a great help to me, on my minecraft server, off it, and on the scratch forums.  I hope he gets accepted as moderator and he is a good guy in general.

Haha, yeah my edit count isn't as impressive as you, as I kind of focus on the community portal (making sure you guys are making the right decisions and such), but mine's certainly noticeable. Thanks for your opinions anyway!

And my age you ask? Well I'm old enough to become a Scratch Community Moderator, that's what I'll say.
