Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

The new system of friending is better. It gets annoying when random people friend you randomly, so if they could follow you without any message saying "SomeRandomGuy added you to his friend's list".

I think keep it the same but add a different section for best friends or subscribers so we can quickly get to our favorite scratchers.

What do you think? Is it worth changing the friend system on Scratch? Or should we just keep the friends system the same? Join in the discussion and share your thoughts.

Check it out, and then join the discussion on this thread!

Why couldn't be a setting of each individuals account to set whether they want to friend like facebook or like it its.

Either way I don't mind.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I really like this idea because many people just add others as friends so that their projects can be viewed. I know some users just add as many people as they can because they are desperate for views. This idea will help a lot, as it is a pain to keep looking at someone else's page until they put up a new project.

EDIT: I read through all of the posts, and now my views have changed a little. A few things to cover:

-Only like, 2 or 3 people seem to have put reasons for why this shouldn't happen.
-Stop the little side arguments, they're annoying.
-My new views (Which include)
-Perhaps it would be better to call followers "subscribers" or something instead.
-The follower idea has one crucial issue -- it is a possible victim to immaturity. What I mean is, people will start fighting like "Oh, I have more followers than you! That means I'm better." Which can possibly lead to many flame wars.
-Because of ^^^^, some people may become jealous, create many new accounts, and follow just for the sake of increasing a number.

I have no idea how to fix these things, but I do not like the friend system as it is. Friend requests are a definite yes, but I am a bit shaky on the follower ideas.

I suppose that's true, but since the current friend system effectively works the same way but with a different name, I don't see it becoming a huge problem.

I'd really like to see an improvement to the friend system with Scratch 2.0, so that becoming friends would require both users to add each other, whereas simply following or subscribing to someone would notify you of any new projects of theirs.

I would like it if the friend request you sent had to be confirmed by the guy recieving it.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Ooh! How about a system where you friend request and you get a message like "You have requested soupoftomato to be friends. Until he accepts, you are marked as a follower of him.  smile "

Which it does what it explains. Then if they accept you just get a quick "Soupoftomato has accepted your request! You are now friends!" and if they deny it's just "Soupoftomato has denied your request. You will remain his follower."

This should definitely be considered by the scratch team.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

i think we should do the "friend or follow" thing. Then random people want just friend you for no reason and you have a decision on if you want to be friends or not. I like the follow option, if scratch has that we can follow scratchers that we're interested in but not close enough to become friends, like spritemaster for example. I friended spritemaster just so i could follow his latest projects.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

agreed, but i think follow should give you a separate notification about a new project, maybe?

and then you could agree to be friends. but that might not work quite as well as i/we think...

Why don't we use both? There could be two lists called 'friends' and 'fans' (or something similar).

If someone adds you, they will be added to the 'fans' list and can follow you etc. and if you add them back they will move in to friends (there could also be a way of becoming their fan without being their friend). As friends, you may be able to to do more things like chat.

I'm all for that idea!

The one thing I don't like about the current system is that I can't find a list of who has "friended" me.

I agree with this.Including the bit at the bottom.

I'm all the way for following and befriending idea. It will make it easier for new scratchers to decided on staying on scratch. (At least that is how I fill.) Anyways, keep yourself rocking man. See ya. XD
