Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Maybe it can be like YouTube. You can follow or "subscribe" to someone, and also friend someone. If this system does get added, all the friends we have now are people we "subscribed" to, so we don't lose our friends list.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

One of the things that might get messed up in this transition is Galleries. Right now we have the option to only allow people on our "friends" list to add to the gallery. If we got rid of the "friends" option, this could cause some problems. Especially for the SDS! And "Only allow Scratchers who are following me to add to this gallery" is a bit of a mouthful  tongue

I think it best if we:
* Make it so you must accept friend requests from other Scratchers.
* Have a "follow" feature for those you think have great projects, but don't quite consider friends.
* If a Scrather denies your friend request, they will automaticly be added to your "follow" list.

And an FYI for those of you worried what the "following" row on the homepage would be called:
On Clutter, it's called "Fan Clutters". Also, on your userpage on Clutter, there is a tab that says "Fans" and it gives you a list of users under the headings of "I'm a fan of..." and "Fans of my Clutters" See here, my Clutter page as an example.  smile

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I agree with Lilacfuzz. I think that when someone declines your friend request , it should ask you if you want to follow them.

Implement this.  There should be something for friends that there isn't already, and what already exists is follow.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I think the new idea is better... much better organization too. But keep the friending non-symmetrical so others can friend me without me having to friend them. It works as a good advertising tool  big_smile  When people friend be, I show up on their list, and anyone who goes to that person's page may click on my username!  wink  Of course its not extremely effective either  smile

I think that the current friend system isn`t good, and should be replaced with the following and accepting system that Lightnin said.

Scratch on!

That's a good question! If we were to move to a facebook style friends system, I think we'd do it by turning everyone's friends into people they follow. So, for a brief moment, there'd be no friends on Scratch!  lol

But of course then everyone could friend each other after that and get things sorted pretty quickly.

Oh, I get it now. I'd like the follow style best!

BOTH!!

There should be a friends system where the other end has to accept or deny the friend request, and there should be a follow system which would be like what Scratch is now, only called “follow” not “friend”. So instead of seeing “henley’s friends” you would see “henley’s followers” or “henley’s fans”, and for the real friends list, you should (instead of the message “[username] has added you to his/her friends list”) have a message saying “[username] wants to be friends. Accept, or deny?” Then the friend requester would receive a message saying, “[your username] accepted your friend request.” Or, “[your username denied your friend request.

So the be more clear, in following, there would be a system very similar to what we have now. In friending, there would be an option to accept and deny. The friends would also be considered “not friends” until the friend requestee decided to accept. Or denied, but they still wouldn’t be friends that way.

i like that idea^ i think that would be best,  because i friend some people just to see their projects on the front page,  or because their projects are cool

That's a good question! If we were to move to a facebook style friends system, I think we'd do it by turning everyone's friends into people they follow. So, for a brief moment, there'd be no friends on Scratch!  lol

But of course then everyone could friend each other after that and get things sorted pretty quickly.

We could start out a with a friends list comprised of people who we follow that also follow us; the reciprocality is already there in those cases. Maybe you would be shown an option to send a friend request to your former 'friends'?

Personally, I think the 'follow' model fits better with the Scratch community than the Facebook-style friending system. Being (mutual) friends with someone on Scratch wouldn't elevate your relationship with them like it does on Facebook; you wouldn't be able to PM them, write on their wall, or chat with them because none of those features exist on the Scratch portal. Viewing and commenting on a Scratcher's work will never require you to be formally connected with them. There is no reason to be friends with someone on Scratch other than to make your relationship a little more concrete, and sometimes that doesn't work both ways. I might want to friend a currently inactive or long-gone Scratcher in the hopes that when people see my profile they will jump over to their profile. This isn't the sort of relationship that requires mutuality.

At the same time, I would like the option to see who your reciprocal friends on Scratch are. I would show "people I follow", "people who follow me", and "friends" (people who fit into the former two) on every Scratcher's profile.

[EDIT] Henley beat me to the punch on this idea! Probably should read the whole thread but I'm mighty tired nad I catn typ srtraigh.t  tongue

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I love the idea of being able to just follow someone without having to friend them. I often find my friend page filling up with people who's projects I like, even though I don't consider myself their friend.

While the current one IS nice, the person who's projects you like doesn't necessarily want to see all of YOUR new projects.

Keep the friending the same, but add the follow feature, plus a flag as innapropiate feature for a bad username.

considering I get hundreds of people adding me as a friend every day who I don't know, it is safe to say most people are using the friend system as following.

That doesn’t make sense. Friend or follow? Which one? Both? Either way, “or” isn’t the proper conjunction, rendering the statement invalid.
