I have a project that I have been working on for a very long time now, it was probably going to be one of my last major scratch projects before I moved on to something else.
Yesterday after I had pretty much finished with the project I saved it then updated the backup, as always I made sure it saved properly.
Now the backup and current version have just stopped working. I am getting "Could not read project; file may be damaged: (key not found)" every time I load them up and I am getting quite frustrated at it.
I really hope there is a way to fix this since all the other topics on this I have seen were about pulling the USB out too soon. Most of the data seems to still be in the file and I will be really annoyed if there is no fix to this.

I don't think there is any way to fix this. :C

Check around the scripts for one with a red outline. Try to figure out what's wrong and then fix it and try uploading again. If that doesn't fix it, than play it over with the green flag, and if something seems really glitchy, fix that, and upload it. If THAT doesn't fix the project, look around your Trash for a file named scratchthumbs, remove it from the trash, and if THAT doesn't fix it, than I don't know what to tell you.

I'm having trouble too. I'm getting that before I can even open the project, and I only started yesterday. HOW DO I FIX THIS?!

This looks more like a problem with Scratch rather than the file itself (unlike what the dialog suggested).
Try redownloading a files-only version of Scratch and opening the project from within that version. If that doesn't work, try on a different computer.
If that doesn't, work, I can't think of anything else to do except for trace back the problem using Squeak. That requires an advanced knowledge of Squeak which few Scratchers have, and takes time. I don't think it's worth it.

I don't know any way to fix this... and that's why I backup multiple version of my Scratch projects with Dropbox.

What ARE files-only versions of scratch?! And what IS squeak?! The problem was no better today; It starts to load, it slows down, that box pops up, and I feel like screaming. I NEED HELP!!!

I see nobody has left an replies. What was to be my first EVER posted project is STILL unopenable. That, and someone has got the same problem as me. I expect Scratch to solve this problem soon, because I seriously am getting downright sick of this.

That happened to me too. I think it's happening more and more to people
I have a vague idea of what might have happened. When it happened to me, I changed the project and decided I didn't like it that way, so for some reason, instead of clicking 'don't save changes' then going back to it, I opened the project again, when it was not changed for the worse, and did not save the other one. Maybe it got confused XD I tried importing the project even, but it froze up a bunch of times and I just gave up.
There probably isn't a way to save your project. Sorry

There's a "Scratchthumbs" file on my desktop. I haven't tried opening it, but I think I will.

Argh, This Happened To Me Too.
Tried Using Microsoft Visual 2010 To Fix The File. No Luck.
I Also Tried Opening The File In Diffrent Versions Of Scratch, Still No Luck.
Prehaps Someone Shoud Contact The Scratch Team About This...

That's only to store the data about how thumbnails appear in Scratch.

I had that problem too, I had to restart EVERYTHING, but I make copies of the sprites and backrounds because I found that was easier than saving the whole thing multiple times, because it wouldn't let me open those XD It may help to put them in a labled folder with the name of your game so you immediately know where to put it/ where it is

Scratch takes time to save, and if you saved it before the error, you should have waited a bit.

scratch thumbs is a database file and cannot be opened by a normal computer

It would be though. I'll try re-downloading, thanks. Do you know any way I could export the sprites or anything without being able to open it? Because that's the only problem I have with restarting, I don't have my sprites saved anywhere else. No need to tell me how stupid it is not to backup any of my game, I already know.

Not really. There are ways to extract data from projects and convert it to XML, as pioneered by some of the Scratchers in Advanced Topics, but there's no way to put them back as a whole without re-writing them.
