Where do absolute beginners start?

Is there a book I can buy?

Can I use any .gif file as a sprite, or a bitmap or jpg?

Thanks....

Re: Where do absolute beginners start?

There's almost a book you can buy..."Scratch Programming for Teens" is listed on Amazon but I'm not sure if you can buy it yet.  No one here on Scratch has read it yet so we don't know how useful it is anyway.

There are a number of resources available online...have you checked out the Support pages yet?

There is also a programming course made available by Dick Baldwin that uses Scratch as the introductory language:

As for what files you can use for a sprite...I know I've used jpg...I'm not sure about .gif or .bmp...probably they will work.  I often use .png since it is the format prefered by Paint.net (free and available online!) which is the image editor I use most.  I hope that helps!

Go to http://www.dickbaldwin.com/homeschool/Hs00120.htm and use your browser to search for png on the web page.

Yes, there is a new book called "Scratch Programming for Teens" by Jerry lee Ford, Jr. (that would be me).

I received an advance copy from the publisher today which means that the book should become generally available in bookstores everywhere (on-line and brick and mortar) within the next few days.

To answer this, you can use .gif, .jpg, .bmp and I believe you can use .png as well.
You can also use all the frames for a .gif (but you might need to import it twice, or at least I have to).

I'd agree with using the Wiki. Much more than a book will ever tell you there!  big_smile
