for some games and ideas a widescreen would be preferable. In a new version of scratch a selection of screen shapes (eg widescreen, normal, landscape) would be very good.

While changing the screen shape might be useful, I can see it causing a lot of mess in the GUI code. The increased bugginess is probably not worth the minor advantage.
