question: I know stealing from chests isn't allowed, but what about when it's just a random chest in the middle of nowhere? and how do I use the pistons?

Pistons aren't out? ._. Duh. And some noob cut down the trees on my lawn and left floating tree thingies. Someone that you recently added to the whitelist is a noob.
It could be Sunrise, or 16Skittles, or Alternatives, or Jimlandiaman...
Not saying that I think they are the griefer/idiot, but there wasn't any griefing for the first month or so of the server being alive, and now there is, and they are the most recent additions to the whitelist.
