Wait, if someone poured water on the lava, and you were in it, but with your head sticking out, would you suffocate? Or be encased in obsidian. Like Han Solo. (Cept it wasn't obsidian he got encased in)

And rabbit, I can't prove anything, but that sounds like you're just trying to get diamonds and stuff free. Why would there be lava where you were and that you happened to be holding all those goodies. Anyone agree?
