No, because what if someone is making something personal for their family or themself only, and someone saw it.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I say no, because I like to keep my projects a secret until I'm done. Also, if I want people to view a beta version, I'll just share it. I wouldn't feel comfortable with the thought of people looking at my stuff before it's done  smile

Maybe, but it would be good if only Scratchers with permission from the creator could view them.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

Scratch would become an even bigger heap of unfinished junk projects.  I think it's a good idea to be able to invite friends to look at your projects before you publicly publish them.

Some ideas:
-instead of remixes, have the ability to publish as co-creators, keeping a shared project private to people invited to work on it
-more developed, cleaner script comment system... (those things some people tag onto scripts)

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

Maybe when you saved the project in the online editor, it would ask you wether or not to make your draft public. Then all draft projects would have some sort of label.

Just an idea.  smile

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

You should be able to make a list of people who can view the project.  Maybe make lists of people in general, so collab projects become way easier.

I don't like to post my projects until they're done.

I would like an easy way to test my draft projects in the various platforms (java player, flash player, dev environment, etc.).

What if you wanted help with some of your code that wasn't working right (even though you are an amazing programer anyways  tongue )? It would help with collabs as well.

Maybe there should be a button for this like in Clutter....

Maybe you could have the choice whether to let people see what projects you're working on...

Agree. Also, when an edit is made, we should have a choice to examine the edit and approve it. Else, people might make edits that will change the whole project to something we don't want.

I think people should not be able to see other people's projects, because what if you were working on a game and you didn't want people to see it until it was finished. Letting people see works-in-progress would ruin the surprise! Also, some projects are never things you want everyone to see. I made my mother a Mother's Day slideshow/e-card, and because it contained photos of my family and full names, it would breach my privacy rights, not to mention be very embarrassing. I suggest that once your project is saved, it is assigned a RANDOM url (if one's project URL for his least-recently saved project is scratch.mit.edu/users/one/unfinished_projects/1, then two's URL for his least recently saved project should NOT be scratch.mit.edu/users/two/unfinished_projects/1. A good random URL would be scratch.mit.edu/iw6%vsbz**cnixu364878776!5ghci5647$#). If you chose, the flash based coder could save a .HTML file to your computer. You could share this .HTML file to people you chose. That would be great so some select people could see your project, instead of only you. Also, going along with the customizable userpages idea, there could be a widget "Projects in progress" that you could hide or show. You could be able to hide or show  projects in that widget, too. Please respond to this by quoting this post if you like it.

Does anybody support my idea?

I do, but for another reason: the projects can be stolen. Hope this helps  smile

I see no plusses for being able to see projects early. If a person wanted constructive criticism they would upload it to a test account

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

Hey guys!!!
I got my new ipad2 a few weeks ago and I use it a lot. I was wondering if the scratch team should make an app for it. iPad app would be Great because my laptop
(windows  sad  Huff ) takes FOREVER to boot up and it processes at the speed of a lightning slug!!! iPad could also do with a project view in HTML or something like that. Moving to the cloud sounds like a good idea though, especially as today's world is becoming more and more cloud based though! Still want an offline app though because at my nan and granddads they have a wireless network that requires you to plug in your computer with an old plug that my computer does not support. Plz make an app for 2.0 and plz for goodness sake get a move on with 2.0, 1.4 came out 2 years ago!!!

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I think it's a good and a bad idea. I think there should be 3 options when working on a project online:
1: Don't show your unfinished work to anyone.
2: Show your unfinished work to everyone.
3: Show your unfinished work to a list of trusted users.
I also think you should be able to change these settings in the middle of working on a project. If you want to show other users your work so far, but didn't want to before, you could change your project's settings to public and wouldn't be stuck with it being private until you upload it.

I think there should also be a collab option, where you make a list of collaborating users and let them work on the project. Maybe the collab option would also have a chat, so people could talk to each other while they collaborated.

It should be a choice whether people see drafts or not, and you should be able to limit it to certain people if you wish. I would like that a lot.

Yes and no. The Scratcher should be able to choose what to show the community and what to hide.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

As an experiment to see if I like people seeing my unfinished work, I posted my latest game to my test account.  I uploaded 8 different versions as I was working on it.  I'm not sure there is any value in them, but you can see them all here: http://scratch.mit.edu/users/BoltTest

I was very nervous as I wasn't sure that everything would work in the end.

You can see the final version of the game here:  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/BoltBait/1897019

In the end, I don't think I like people seeing my projects before they are finished.  There was too much stress to complete the project successfully.  I would be very embarrassed to admit to the world that I failed and had to abandon a project.  As it is now, no one knows how many projects I've started and not finished... and, I'd like to keep it that way.

I would like to hear from the Scratch Team:  In your opinion, was there any value in seeing those projects over just seeing the final project?

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I've read through pretty much the entire thread, and here's what I think, based off of everyone else's opinions, and my own:

There should be an option that no-one can see what you've made: do not share.
An option to share with everybody: share publicly.
Those are done already, quite simply.

Now the third: share with a group.
Technically this is possible already also.
When you choose this, you could pick people from your friend list to share with. It would be like the gallery addition permission options: "share with all/some of my friends." (See the mockup below.  tongue )
Once you click share, each of them would receive a message:

USER wants to share their project "TITLE" with you. Accept or deny?

If they deny, they lose their chance to see it.
If they accept, they can view it. The Scratch Team cannot view privately shared projects, unless they are flagged. Yes, there would be a flag option for the private projects, but no loveits, favorites, gallery additions, embed, or tags. Only flag and comments.

Private projects would have to have a URL, like /projects/privateprojects/USER/PRIVATE_ID (make sure there isn't a user called "privateprojects"  tongue ). Though I guess you could spend your life guessing to see one private project, no-one would do that lol. There also wouldn't be an API thing for it.
Or maybe it could just be /projects/private.php.

Of course, people can't just peek without permission.  smile

What do you think of these?

I made a mockup of it, which can be viewed here.

I like 180 second rule better than 360, but still prefer (6)0.  neutral
