Bring torches yes, but also bring sticks and coal, not just stacks of torches, you get mor that way, and it takes up less space.

Ya. If you don't bring armor, you will most likely die. Minerals are real easy to find in caves, so mine to get your tools, then use caves for mineral purposes.
