Anyway, GLaDOS is Chell's mother. Don't stare at me, it's true. At least, Chell is Caroline's daughter. There were various places I collected this information.
It was mostly from the song that the turrets were singing. I attempted to translate them from Italian, but couldn't so I looked it up. The lyrics in Italian are:
Cara bella, cara mia bella!
Mia bambina, o Chell/Ciel!
Ché la stimo...
Ché la stimo.
O cara mia, addio!
La mia bambina cara,
perché non passi lontana?
Sì, lontana da Scïenza,
cara, cara mia bambina?
Ah, mia bella!
Ah, mia cara!
Ah, mia cara!
Ah, mia bambina!
O cara, cara mia...
In English, it would be:
Dear beautiful, my beautiful darling!
My child, oh Chell!/oh Heavens!
For I hold her in esteem...
For I hold her in esteem.
Farewell to my dear!
My dear girl,
why do you not walk away?
Yes, away from Science,
my dear, my dear girl?
Ah, my beautiful!
Ah, my dear!
Ah, my dear!
Ah, my child!
Oh dear, my dear...
Actually, translated literally from Italian, "bambina" means "little girl, female child."
WHo would use that except...
...The child's mother?
And GLaDOS is the only one who would possible set up all those turrets.
GLaDOS...why?

If I had played Portal 2, I could probably find a way to prove you wrong...
But for now, cool!

Nice!!! There's a poster somewhere in portal 2, when you're underground in the chambers, where you can see a poster, and it looks like it's Chells Mother or Chell! I really cant decide! It's the room with the projector in it
Also, have you seen the comic? It basically ties the events of portal 2 and 1 together, with the story of the ratman. (those dens and hidey holes you find? He created the!)
Just google: Portal 2 Comic
Hope i Helped!

That would mean Cave Johnson is her father...
How did he motivate her to grow that giant potato?

Offline
Looking on the YouTube comments, people are saying she was abducted by GLaDOS On bring your daughter to work day
Offline
No, Cave Johnson and Caroline are her parents. Cave wanted his memory to be put on a personality core before he died, but it was unsuccessful, so he put Caroline's memory on it instead.
Before this, though, Caroline(human) brought Chell to Aperture on bring your daughter to work day, where she was abducted to use as a test subject. Then, there was a period of time that hasn't been explained, I think that she was in stasis.
Now, grown up Chell is ready to be a test subject, and her mother has died and been put into the personality core. That core was later put onto GLaDOS, but I don't think she wanted to reveal the truth.
However, this is all questionable because GLaDOS said that in Chell's file, it said that she was adopted.

GLaDOS didn't remember anything about Caroline, and then became a self-aware sadist computer.

What I (and a bunch of other people) think is that Caroline brought Chell in for Take Your Daughter To Work Day and GLaDOS took her and adopted her. Then, when Chell grew up, she was used as a test subject.
There actually is a bit of proof of this. In one of the rooms in Portal 2, there is a room with all these science projects (most have to do with potatos) and one is this big potato growing up into the ceiling, and in the corner of the project, it says 'By Chell'

Dangitt. Valve needs to continue this plot. I can't stand not knowing the backstory behind Caroline.
It's highly likely that GLaDOS is Chell's mother. Everything adds up. What I don't get though, is there's a secret part in the game where you rescue a turret from the redemption line (you get an achievement for it.) If you pick it up and put it down a few times, the turret eventually mentions that its name is Caroline...

Yeah, I remember the redemption line. This guy's like, "No, please get off of the redemption line. The redemption line is not a ride. Please get off."
I also remember that turret...
I HAS THOUGHT UP RANDOM CONCLUSION:
When a test subject is killed, GLaDOS finds the subject and somehow makes them a turret. The turrets are being FORCED to hurt you, since they are test subjects just like you. There is even a secret area of the game where you can see and hear a few turrets singing (no, Im not talking about the ending), so maybe that's the only thing to do during their free time. And at the end of the game, it shows that giant group of turrets singing to you. They're singing to you because it's the only thing they can do besides shooting lasers, and they want to sorta congratulate you for being a test subject like they were and actually survive. Turrets being old test subjects explains the Caroline thing, too.
Makes sense, right?

GLaDOS is not Chell's mother. GLaDOS was acting like that because Caroline's personallity was stored in her brain. It activated when she heard Cave Johnson speak. Chell was abandoned at birth by her parents, so Caroline might have adopted her. Then, GLaDOS convinced them to do 'Bring Your Daughter to Work Day' (read the comic to find out why I think this.) On that day, GLaDOS somehow seperated the girls from the scientists and put neurotoxin in the room the adults were in. She then stored the girls in stasis chambers and tested them. She needed to get test subjects because the scientists wouldn't let her have access to the cloning chambers, and while she was testing the girls she built robots that would help her get to the cloning room.
That's what I think, anyways.

No, the turret says "Her name is Caroline." not "My name is Caroline"
The turret, nicknamed "The Prophet Turret" give short clues to the ending of the game. I'll runthrough some info about each quote:
"Get mad!"
Obvious Cave Johnson quote
"Don't make lemonade!"
Obvious Cave Johnson quote
"Promethius was punished by the gods for giving the gift of knowledge to man. He was cast into the bowels of the earth and pecked by birds."
There's probably some symbolism behind the punished by the god part, but the pecked by birds part is simple if you remember PotatOS XD
"It won't be enough."
"The answer is beneath us."
I don't understand these two quotes. Maybe the turret is saying replacing GlaDOS with Wheatley won't be enough? And the beneath us part refrencing him throwing you into that large hole?
"Her name is Caroline."
See. this is what I'm talking about right here. Obviously the prophet turret is trying to help us by predicting future/restating past. By Caroline, the turret obviously means Cave Johnson's assistant/GlaDOS.
"Remember that!"
This turret is our buddy.
"That's all I can say."
And with that quote, most of us threw the prophet into the abyss. Jerks.

I think it might mean that the answer to all of these questions that we have is in the game, that the answers are down in the old labs.
