Close, but not quite

Today, I went to my school district's spelling bee, representing my middle school with several others. There were about 30 people competing there, representing their schools. I really wanted to go to county, and I was SO CLOSE. In the main Bee, me and three others tied for first. So we had a tiebreaker. Only the winner would move on to the county competition. But during the tiebreaker, my nerves took hold of me. I missed several words I shouldn't have missed, and I got third place. You may be saying: "Hey, that isn't so bad!" But the reality is, only first place goes to county. My dreams were crushed. I almost made it, but I didn't. So now I'm sad. Discuss.

Re: Close, but not quite

Spelling bees can be painful. :'( Two years, I won my classroom and school spelling bees but then went to the city spelling bee and failed. The worst part is that there's a lot of luck involved with the words you get. You might get the hardest word on the list and get out in the first round, and then have to sit and watch all the other contestants spell easy words.

Yeah, that does happen a lot. They really should structure it better, because having hard words early on is no fun, especially words you've never even heard of before. Plus, the added stress of being higher up isn't any fun either.

Re: Close, but not quite

I won my school bee (Well, I placed in the top five) so I went to my county bee. I was the only sixth grader representing my school (We had two eighth graders and two seventh graders and one me, and just about everyone was friends with my sister so they all knew me but I didn't know them so it was creepy meeting with them after school twice a week). I got out in the third round on the word hygiene. I put the i before the e :C
But by the end of the second round more than half of the kids were already out anyway so whatever
There's always next year (If I win my class bee, and then the school bee again)
I really hate spelling bees though
I had a bad experience in first grade

Meh. Spelling bees give you plenty of emotions.
Anger, sadness, hatred

Early grade spelling bees are kinda pointless.

If that was inclass, tell your teacher -- they could help you not be scared anymore.

I just almost cried because of that.

If you wanted to see the ultimate emotion of failling at spelling bees, talk to Getty. whose username should have been CHOCLATE.

I knew you'd go there. Yes, I spelled chocolate wrong in my 6th grade spelling bee. And yes, I won the school spelling bee and placed top 10 in my regional spelling bee for the next 2 years.  tongue

Oh yes Getty. Why did you have to go ruin the moment. You just made him feel bad.

Re: Close, but not quite

I was in a spelling bee in second grade, I won and was promised a milkshake from the Big Dipper along with other kids that memorized and passed their 9 Times Tables, but they forgot me and all I got was a can of fruit punch.
