Nowadays, most artists do pop, which proves that it takes 0% skill and 100% autotune to make. Also, the music is incredibly repetitive, so I only listen to universal music (even though there are only about two artists I can think of in that category).

My favorite styles of music are electronic (chiptune, dubstep, techno, house, ambient, etc.) and rock (classic, prog, indie, alternative, etc.)
I don't particularly like pop, but I respect old pop (Wham!, INXS, etc.) because a lot of it actually was moderately good, people actually played instruments and sang well, and it was influential. New pop (some 1990s, 2000s, 2010s) is pretty terrible. I especially loathe rap and rap-soaked-pop (with one exception, The Go! Team). It just seems like talking to me. Somebody played me an Usher song, "OMG". It's funny that people call it soul, because it just seems so soulless and robotic. Of course, that may just be the lyrics and Autotune, but whatever. I don't have anything against upbeat music like much pop is, but I prefer my music to have music in it.
Rock, on the other hand, has almost always shown people with skill, with the exceptions of most punk bands and new grunge bands (and while the punks don't have technical skill, they make up for it with excellent bad attitude. ;]) Historically, since the very beginning of rock and roll, the genre has been entwined together with pop music. For example, Elvis Presley. However, rock also goes places pop never dares. Sheer loudness and noise (The Clash, * Pistols, Sonic Youth, Wire), monumental sonic landscapes (Yes, King Crimson, ELP), basement recordings that contain songs just as excellent as their higher fidelity cousins (Guided by Voices, Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel), and many, many more. But even though there is so much excellent rock, there is also trash. Quite a bit of metal is terrible (though not all!). Also, a lot of post-grunge and pop-punk (Breaking Benjamin, Cage the Elephant, Green Day) is also just as generic and formulaic as the pop that you're criticising. One of the saddest music-related experiences I know is when an excellent rock band turns poppy. (Weezer, I'm looking at you. Though you are coming back.)
Rock is definitely better than pop. Pop can be good in small doses, though. Just not nü-pop. Though rock vs. electronic is a different matter. ;]

I'd like to start this post off by saying no genre is better than other - enjoying or loathing a genre or another is all taste - therefore, the reasons people might give for their opinion are pretty subjective.
But if I had to pick between rock and pop I guess I'd pick rock. Nowadays most pop artists are all about the money and not enjoying what they do, their own music. In fact one of my friends composes pop music, and ever since his manager found him he's pretty much shoving down our throats the fact that he's getting lots of money.
But I agree with veggieman001, old pop was pretty good. New pop however, is infested with these teenage artists who sell out their talents (if they have talent in the first place, heh
) to the music industry.
But rock is pretty much the opposite, many emerging artists seem pretty underrated, even though they actually bother writing their own songs and playing them as-is with very little modification on the studio versions. And their songs are, usually, more listen-able than modern pop.
TL;DR: Rock and old pop rule, new pop artists drool.

I agree with you guys, all rock (with the exception of Nickleback) and classic pop is the best because they had talent. Now, pop is just nothing.

Rockstars last longer than popstars, as they have more talent. The maximum shelf life of the average popstar is like 2 years.

Heavy metal and screamo rock (like As I Lay Dying) is stupid and the lyrics are totally incomprehensible.RRAR
Not Nickelback, they (well, can't say it on here). Try Nirvana, Pearl Jam
And some of the oldies, Beatles, Rolling Stones, White Stripes. The Bomb.
Aah, I like Nickleback a bit.

This is really a great point. I've never really looked at it like that.
