Karma - Thanks Meter

I actually think, that scratch should have a "karma"-ish thing in the forums. Each post has a "thanks" button, and when someone presses that on your post, it means that that post has helped that someone. Then, there are ranks, based on the thanks meter for that person.

Such as:
New scratcher
Scratchee
Scratcher
Helpful Scratcher
Advanced Scratcher

Etc.

I don't think I made the ranks part right. it definitely can be improved.

This is just an idea that you can build on. What do you think?

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

You mean similar to on the suggest page? I like the idea of people being able to mark posts as helpful, maybe as a way for people looking for help to quickly find the most useful response to a question. However, I don't like the idea of ranks. A lot of people have said this before, but lower ranked members may feel bad about their title, and some higher ranks could even put them down for it.

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

What if people just made a bunch of accounts and pressed it on all of them?
What if people pressed it when it wasn't helpful?

There are a few flaws...

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

I never look at the Suggestions site. xD

Anyways: I think this would be fun to have, but it goes into that little section of "Rating Projects", it might end up making people feel bad.  hmm  Though I would find it interesting to know how many people have thanked me for helping them  tongue

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

This would segregate Scratchers and create friction - you know, what do you expect when you sort Scratchers into ranks?

Of course, it would be extremely satisfying to see everyone in All About Scratch as Advanced Scratchers and everyone in Miscellaneous as Scratchee...

I don't support ranks like this too much...  hmm  And there was this thing in the TBG recently where people could vote if they wanted an 'Experienced TBGer' rank thing that would reduce the 60 second rule; most people (including me  tongue ) didn't want it...

I am thinking that it would be a good idea, but I don't get what we would need it for. I think it could help people wan't to work harder to get a better ranking by helping the community which would be great!

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

The idea of a karma system (or a reputation system, as it is sometimes called) has been in the Scratch Team's heads for a while - the problem is finding a good system to implement.

Keep in mind: The biggest problem with the rep system comes with who is giving positive or negative rep - for example, a lot of people would positively rep friends only, or people might positively rep bad behavior while adding negative rep for good behavior.

I think it's a good idea to take a look into the rep system of other websites to get ideas.

Here's what some other website put into place, maybe we could develop some good ideas from what others have put into place:
-> new members can't give any rep to to other members until they've proven themselves to be an active member. (In most forum systems, this shows up as a "neutral rep")
-> you can see who gave you positive rep and you can see who gave you negative rep.
-> the user is required to give a reason for negatively repping someone. If the one receiving the negative rep feels this is unfair, then, he/she can go to a mod or admin to contest the negative rep given.
-> reputation is given by moderators and/or administrators only.
-> the amount of reputation you receive affects which parts of the website you can access.
-> users are barred from repping the same person continuously (ie, you need to spread rep before giving rep to the same person you just gave rep to).

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

This idea isn't bad, many forums have this kind of system. I'm not sure about ranks though. That could end up like posts counts and no one would give karma (or whatever it's called) because they want to be a higher rank then the other person. I do like it as a way to give credit for good ideas or helpful posts.

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

You guys are right about the ranks thing. I just think, there should be a way to classify scratchers. Maybe just another rank, called Advanced Scratcher, would be for people that have 500 thanks (?) and they are rated helpful by the community.

Just so if you have a question, you know who you can look to.

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

I see what you mean, but people would still just give their friends approvals and no one else. It would become like post counts.

That's why we need a better system for "little" kids. -_-

But also, like Cheddar said. You have become the Scratcher Rank before you can give thanks.

I rather agree with JonathanPB and Harakou and whoever else said this would separate groups of Scratchers... I think it's best people are all as one.

Not necessarily. A 'karma' system of sorts isn't necessarily a bad idea, I think it's just agreed that ranks are not good for the community.

But see, the only reason why it isn't good, it's because the little kids won't like it.  tongue

^Agreed.
----------
The main point of a karma system is to act as a gauge on the behavior of a person, as a way to promote good behavior while reprimanding bad ones. Most effective karma systems that I have seen don't really include ranks and they [the karma meters] work just as well without ranks included into the system.

Like I said before, the Scratch Team is interested in using a karma system, but finding a good karma system best suited to the Scratch website's dynamics is tricky - so the first priority should be designing an effective karma system first.  wink

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

How about instead of a karma system, a behavior system?

Each user starts at 0, and every month you go without breaking the rules, you get 10 points or something? And every time you break a rule, your points get deducted.

Well, then it'd be like post counts. How about just a little meter below post count, says:

Thanks: NUMBER HERE

I like this idea, but I think that you shouldn't be able to give bad rep until it has been seconded by a moderator or such.

Re: Karma - Thanks Meter

Well, the final idea, is, you have to be a "scratcher" status to give thanks.

Each post beside the: report|Quote would have a button that says: Thanks.

A little box under that post would say: The following users said Thanks to this post: (Number here) List of users here.

And on the little profile box on the left of the posts:

Or maybe, just the number, not the names. That way, you'll know if that post is actually helpful...
