I agree, but that's not what Scratch is about. Maybe what I've see nrequested before: A chat forum. It goes along with Scratch, and the Show & Tell forum wont get crowded (since we get off-topic a lot)

It can offer close to everything. I use the Freewebs chat forums to chat. It's fun there. Check out my site. It's all about Scratch!

This is a great idea. A Forum Topic that is named "Chatroom". The decription should say "This is a place in the forums where people that don't have anything to say about the other topics can chat endlessly. Keep it positive." That would bring more people to the forums, improve Scratch's popularity, and it would stop everyone from leaving Scratch. The Scratch Team should really consider this while this maintenence work is going on right now. Still a great idea!!!

I Agree! They Should Consider It.
I Hope That There Will Be One Soon!

Sorry, we are not considering adding chatrooms to Scratch. The are other better sites for that. Maybe we should partner with a good chatroom website and ask them to create a Scratch chatroom there for us? Does anyone know a good, clean, fast and family-friendly chatroom website?

I think Xat chat rooms are available. I forget the link, something like xat.com or something. But you can make a Scratch one

Partnering with another website that specializes in chatroom software would probably be a good idea. (I assume that chatroom software has as many, and possibly more potential technical problems as forum software.) However, along with that, you need to be thinking of ways to encourage people to use the chatroom in order to prevent individual forum threads from turning into chatrooms. Maybe you could create a new category named Chatroom with the description given earlier. Then allow only one thread in that category named GoToChat and make it sticky. Allow only one post in the thread and make it contain a link to the partner chatroom site.

Since I don't frequent chatrooms, I don't know anything about them. However, I do know that GMAIL has some kind of a chat feature which I have disabled on my GMAIL account. I don't know if Google/GMAIL would be a partnering candidate or not, but I do know that GMAIL is free and is usually pretty fast.

We do not particularly feel like chatrooms belong to our core effort so we are not so keen on the idea of adding a 'chatroom' forum. Seems like there are so many better and more suited chat places. I've been trying to tell people not to use our site as a chatroom but obviously that doesn't work. Banning chatting is also hard without affecting regular communication. That's why I thought maybe delegating chats to an external organization with strict monitoring could be an option. However, I do not know of any. I agree gtalk is pretty neat but that's more of a IM than a chatroom.

I See What You Mean, What I Was Think About Though, Was Something With Sercurity Features, But Now That I Think About It Those Would Kind Of Difficult To Employ And Enforce, So Mabey It Isn't So Much Of A Good Idea After All...

What about a way to comment on people's My Stuff page? MRN found a way around that by creating her own guestbook, but I feel a bit self-assured doing that . We could also have blogs to give people updates and whatnot...
