How to divide by zero: A guide.

How to Divide by Zero:
A guide by PW132

Step 1:
Find a scientific calculator. You may think this will be the most useful step, but it will actually be entirely worthless.

Step 2:
Enter X divided by zero. Any 1-digit number that is not 0 will do for X, but I entered 5.

Step 3:
If you did it right, the scientific calculator will display something akin to “DIVIDE BY 0 ERROR.” This is why the calculator will be entirely worthless. (As is, at least.)

Step 4:
Find a minimum 15-story building and throw the calculator out the 14th floor window when the wind is exactly 1 mph, and make sure it lands face down on concrete.

Step 5:
Take the now broken calculator inside, and open it up if the casing is not broken.

Step 6:
Solder a wire to the pad for the button you tried to divide by zero earlier.

Step 7:
Do the same for the “0,” “divide,” “enter,” and “clear” buttons. Then solder one to the + and - sides on the calculator battery.

Step 8:
Solder a female DB-9 connector (The kind used for Sega Genesis or Atari 2600 video game controller ports) to the wires. You can solder the button wires to the 1-4 and 6 pins, but put the power wires on the correct pins or else you’ve ruined everything. Idiot.
http://www.greatsys.com/images/cables/rs232_db9.gif
Pin 7 is power in and pin 8 is negative ground.

Step 9:
Plug in a Atari 2600 or Sega Genesis compatible controller to the port and turn the calculator on.

Step 10:
Fiddle around with the joystick or directional pad on the controller and the buttons very very fast.

Step 11:
Keep on doing that.

Step 12:
Keep going.

Step 13:
Faster.

Step 14:
Even faster.

Step 15:
Not fast enough.

Step 16:
Congratulations, you have divided by zero! The constant signals from your controller activated the buttons very rapidly and overloaded the calculator so it had no choice but to divide by zero. The fact that 1. What you just did was impossible from a math stand point because you cannot divide by zero and 2. what you just did is impossible from an electronics standpoint because you can’t overload a calculator that way and even if you did it wouldn’t be forced to divide by zero made the universe to make you, the calculator, and the controller disappear and die. You will unfortunately never know the answer 1. Because the calculator no longer exists and 2. because you are dead, but who cares, you did it!

It fits in infinite times and still does not reach the objective, therefore it is undefined.

0/0 is equal to every number in existence, as any number times 0 equals 0.  Therefore it is undefined.

I fear for American schools.

My primary school teacher was convinced 6/0 = 6. That's why I only got 99% on a maths test.

X = 3
X / 0 = 0, none X cakes fit into any of the 0 bowls. But,
0 / X = infinity, because infinity of the 0 cakes fit into any of the X bowls.

Hope that sums it all up.  smile

Re: How to divide by zero: A guide.

You got it backwards. X/0 = infinity, and 0/X =0

X/0 is not infinity, as X people share 0 cakes, it's 0.
0/X is actually X becuase 0 people (pretend there's actually 1) share X cakes.

0/X is actually X becuase 0 people (pretend there's actually 1) share X cakes.

Um, that's completely wrong.  Look at my above post for the correct answer.
For the first one it is X cakes between 0 people, which is undefined.
For the second you cannot pretend there is 1, there is 0.  0 between anything is 0.  0/X does not yield an unreal answer.
My above post proves it without using a real-world example, as real-world examples can be situational.

Re: How to divide by zero: A guide.

At first glance it seems possible to define a/0 by considering the limit of a/b as b approaches 0.

For any positive a, the limit from the right is

however, the limit from the left is

and so the  is undefined (the limit is also undefined for negative a).

Furthermore, there is no obvious definition of 0/0 that can be derived from considering the limit of a ratio. The limit

does not exist. Limits of the form

in which both ƒ(x) and g(x) approach 0 as x approaches 0, may equal any real or infinite value, or may not exist at all, depending on the particular functions ƒ and g (see l'Hôpital's rule for discussion and examples of limits of ratios). These and other similar facts show that the expression 0/0 cannot be well-defined as a limit.
