Let's say you make a sprite, and want to make a running stickman. You make a first costume a standing stickman. Then, make another costume. It'll show with transparency the stickman from the last costume, and you can draw the next costume accordingly. The transparent costume part from the second costume or the other costumes wouldn't show in the actual game/animation. It's 7 onion skins, though, on Scratch it'd be better having 2 or 3.
