I guess making people feel awkward gets you money.
I was in the city the other day, and I saw these performers break dancing. They said, "Clap your hands! If you're a white dude take a look at the black guy next to you and get some rhythm!"
Then later on, they lined up a bunch of girls that they would jump over. One yelled, "WAAAIT! We need an asian dude!" They took an asian man out of the crowd and put him in from of the girls and they said in a bad fake chinese accent "Do not back out, that would dishonor your family!" They then said "If you want me to jump these people, yell do it!" Everyone yelled. Then he said, "If you really want me to jump, yell Do It, black guy!" and only a few people yelled. He then called us chicken, and when we yelled that, he called us racist. He then jumped the people and made more asian jokes to the asian guy.
That's not even HALF of the racism that they used in jokes. It was a very racist show, but it was awkward enough to squeeze some money out of all the asian people and white people in the crowd. Those guys must be rich.

I think when it is handled that jokingly and people realize what they signed up for, while still bad, people care about as much as they would if it was blonde jokes or a Yo Momma.

They were street performers, no one signed up.
